HD auto-switching to SD

Hello,

I recently had my Joey 2's replaced to Joey 3's and I've noticed an issue where if I'm watching an HD channel it will eventually automatically switch to the SD version of the channel on it's own. If I go back into the guide and select the channel again it automatically goes back to the HD version. I've hidden all SD duplicates in the guide and I do NOT have this issue on my 4k Joey or Hopper 3 - only on the Joey 3s and it only started happening after the swap out. Weather is perfectly fine and as stated before other receivers are fine except the Joey 3s.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hit Home 3 times on the remote, then hit 4 for Whole Home and see if the link or the Moca shows as weak

So they all say strong, but there's something weird going on. I have 1 Hopper, 1 4K Joey, and 3 Joey 3s for a total of 5 receivers.

On the main whole home screen I see all 5 devices - Hopper at the top and the 4 devices below all show strong.

If I click on MoCA Summary I only see the Hopper 3 and 4K Joey under Current and Historic

If I click on MoCA Details, I only see the Hopper and 4K Joey as well with a 1 and 2.

No mention of the Joey 3s on the Summary or Details screen, just the main Whole Home screen.

Could this be an issue? Joey 3s haven't had any other issues than the HD to SD thing.

BTW, I'm checking all of this from my Hopper because that's where I am right now.

Yeah, that's where I'd be looking. Something seems like it's not cabled/connected correctly, which is odd, too, since the old Joeys were fine, right?

Yeah old Joey 2s were perfectly fine and no cabling was changed. New Joey 3s are still fine and work except for the whole random switching from HD to SD.

When I go to one of the Joey 3s it shows that it's linked the the Hopper. Is there a way to unlink it and attempt to relink it in order to reset it or something?

That's an odd one. A Joey 3 doesn't have any requirements above what Joey 2 does, Another thing, just in case, all connectors seated properly?? A recessed dielectric can cause signal loss

Are you on the Western Arc? If so my theory is those joey's are losing the signal or have a weak signal from the 129 satellite even though the Hopper and 4K are not having the problem. So it would lead me to look hard at the connections specifically to the Joeys. I would be checking if something got connected backwards or somehow wrong besides just not connected tightly.
Not quite as clear if you are on the Eastern Arc as HD is more split. (Unless it's only locals on the EA then it would problem from 61.5)

Also are you certain nothing was changed when the Joey 3's were installed?

Yes all connectors were seated properly and nothing else was changed at all. I followed the Dish Tech around as he removed the old Joey 2 and hooked up the Joey 3. I am on Western Arc but don't see any signal issues, and as stated before there were absolutely no changes or issues before the swap out.

The thing that I find weird is that on the Hopper just those 3 Joeys don't show up under the MoCA summary or details, but otherwise work just fine with programming and all. I would think that if it wasn't linked properly or communicating with MoCA properly it wouldn't receive any programming at all.

Being on WA strengthens what I posted then.I think the switch to SD is because those Joeys see a signal loss (or very weak) from 129 and acts like it does in a weather situation when HD can't be seen so it goes to SD. Going off what HipKat said it could be a cabling issue and it is producing interference for those HD channels, producing a weak signal.
Also have you unpaired/disconnected them from the Hopper and then paired them again?

The only reason I don't think it's a signal situation is because the Joey 2s worked just fine in the same exact spots with the same exact wiring. Basically the cables were unplugged from the Joey 2s and plugged directly into the Joey 3s. Nothing else changed, so it doesn't make sense that it would be a signal issue, but I do appreciate the suggestion.

As far as unpairing/repairing them to the Hopper - I don't think I have found where to do this. If I go to the Joey, go to the Whole Home screen and then select the Hopper, the only option I get is "Link to this device" or something similar. If I click that, nothing happens since I assume it's already "linked" somehow. I see no option to unlink.

Can you switch locations for awhile of the 4K Joey with one of the Joey 3's? See if the 4K develops the problem and if the Joey 3 no longer has it? There is obviously some problem if MOCA Summary is not showing the Joey 3's.
How are the MOCA lines distributed to those three, is it three lines from a junction box? Another words is there something in common for those three lines that could be the problem different from where the 4K joey is?

I'm on EA, but Thursday night I was watching a channel that claimed it had suffered a signal loss and was switching to SD, but then gave me a very strong signal off 77 and was clearly still in HD. Later that night, it went back to 61.5 and pretty low signal strength. (I need to get that dish peaked.) Is Dish moving channels around a lot?

77? Or 72? Sounds like skew may be a bit off.

77. I too was surprised. This channel used to be on 72 with only locals on 61.5. Now many channels are on 61.5. Now I suppose it was so far off that my menu 6-1-1 reported the wrong sat, but that seems doubtful. If skew were off by a much, I would not expect to get any signal off 61.5. But the signal from 61.5 and 72 seem to be fairly uniformly low. Is 77 still QPSK? That might explain why I saw a 50 on my meter when that channel was on 77.

Do you know if Dish will come out and peak my dish for free? If not, I'll just hire somebody with a meter.

Today I am replacing my metro OTA antenna with a deep fringe antenna that I hope will pull in Baltimore stations (MPT in particular) to fix my WETA guide problem on 26.1. Dish hasn't fixed that issue since I found out about it by dropping my sat locals. :crying The real puzzler is the guide comes in just fine for 26.2, 3, and 4. Do you have this issue?
