With FIOS, you get everything, uncompressed, and for less money. Go figure.

And who told you that FIOS is "UNCOMPRESSED" ???
Do you have fios ?
Is this Fiber optic service .......
To the node ? or to the Home ? or do you know ?

Everything is always greener if it's not what you have.
I am working with fiber placing, we have a lot of fiber to the node and a small area to the house so far. (at&t)

Those in Columbus, Ohio will have FTTN available soon if not already and some will have FTTH as well.

Fios is to the premises and is only in such limited areas; MAYBE 5% of the total US can get it (anyone have a real number). It is great BUT it is NOT a national service trying to please a vast quantity all at once from coast to coast. That offers then loads of advantages. It is always worth a look in the areas that might have it but not a pure comparison.

Jimbo: Yes we have FIOS-to the house. It is fiber optic, and it is a full bandwidth 1080i transmission. We can measure it. We also have FIOS internet service. Our average download speed is about 15.1 mbps and our average upload is about 1.8 mbps.

We still have D* at our vacation home. FIOS has more channels, more HD channels, and all the channels look better to us. It cost $24/month less for every channel (minus porn and spanish/international) with four HD DVRs than D* does with fewer channels and four boxes, three of which are DVRs, two HD.

D*'s DVRs have twice the hard drive capacity, better remotes and better menus.

Just an opinion, that's all. We think FIOS has better video, and D* has better hardware. If we had to have to have just one, we'd keep the FIOS, but I would mourn the loss of TiVo and 250 gig hard drives.

FIOS is not generally available nationwide, but to those for whom it's available, it's a good choice to consider, and will elimimate most of the channel and video quality griping we see here. FIOS, put simply, has every national HD channel, plus local HDs, and great video.

Do you have stock in D* or a relative who works there? We don't-we just make our own consumer choices based upon our needs and price.

Why do people get so excited and emotional about this? All we are talking about is which company carries what channels at what level of service. We have both D* and FIOS, and we are moderately happy with both. Everyone makes their own choices.

Do you pick your friends by what satellite or cable TV service they like the best, or attack them if they disagree with you or you think they know less than you do?

By the way, the guy who "told me" that FIOS is uncompressed (besides Verizon) is a PhD, and a video expert with a full suite of test equipment who spent two hours at two of our houses measuring the stuff to see if Verizon was lying or not. They're not. He knows more than me. My pal's day job is designing the next generation of DLP video chips. I believe him. You may not. Not everyone likes DLP, either. I like Sony's SXRD.

Whatever all this means, the FIOS transmission just looks better to us, a little better with HD and a lot better on the SD channels.

All I wanted was all the national HD channels. I got them, and for less money. I'm happy with it.

the reason why dtv did this deal by adding local hd channels first is because how many national hd channels actually are there?? let's see, TNT, ESPN, ESPN2, Discovery, National Geographic, HBO, Starz, Showtime...and how many people have HD sets?? majority of the people want their locals first and that was dtv's strategy, by fall of 07, many more national stations will broadcast in HD, and that's when it will actually be worth it to dtv to get those channels

This is true but it amazes me every day, that people want network TV more than they want the national channels. If network TV was what I wanted, I would not have gotten into sats to begin with 15 years ago, just stayed with 12 channel cable.

I am continually amazed at all the people who watch network TV. Sorry to go on and on about this, but until I joined sat forums, I really had no idea.

Anyway, I have read that D* is pushing national channels to add their HD versions ASAP to help them use some of the great HD capacity D* will have next year, and that is good news.

People want network because it offers the most 1st run shows and live sports. Add to that they want a choice over their local cable company and some can't get reliable OTA.

A friend of mine had FIOS and was very pleased with the PQ, but ended up going back to satellite because they didn't offer the RSN Sports package or the NFL Network. This was a couple of months ago. Have they made any recent moves toward adding them to their line up?

Another thing to consider is, the price point right now sounds much cheaper, lets see where it is when it is redily available to the majority of people.

Happy Camper,

Do you have stock in D* or a relative who works there?

No, I do have plenty of at&t stock though.
I could care less about D*'s stock.

I would find it very dificult to believe that fios is NOT compressed at all, with all the digital encoding going on.
Even the OTA signal that we all like better IS compressed, just not as much as D* and DISH and Cable.

Does it just flow down the line ?

Lou: I've got to be the only straight guy I know who does not have D*'s NFL Season Ticket, and I just about never watch any of the RSN channels, even though we get all of them on D*.

FIOS does not have all of the RSN channels, but FIOS does have the NFL Network, and it has the NFL channel in HD, which D* does not have. We get all of the Fox Sports networks channels, and video on demand has most of the pay per view RSN selections individually, and some of the free stuff, but not the whole rundown-not even close. D* does not have the Fox SW channel in HD, FIOS does.

In addition to all of the usual sports channels like ESPN, Golf, NFL, etc, North Texas also gets Fox College Sports-Atlantic, Central and Pacific, The Tennis Channel, Golf, Outdoor Channel, Fox Soccer, GolTV, Horse Racing TV, TVG (more horses), Mav TV, Blackbelt TV, G4, The Sportsman Channel, and we get ESPN, ESPN2, the NFL and Fox Sports Net-Southwest in HD as well as SD.

The sports selections video on demand have most every event you can think of on an individual basis, free or ppv, but I don't order or watch the individual games.

If I were a sports nut, as opposed to just a network telecast NFL fan and golf fan, I'd think D* would be the best pick of any of the services.

Our FIOS 8 HD locals, generally, are NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC, PBS, WB and UPN (and KDFI local also) (we also get the .2 digital channels with weather, etc.) and national HD includes TNT, ESPN, ESPN2, NFL, FSNSWHD, HDNet, HDNet Movies, Universal, Discovery, WealthTV, National Geographic, MTVHD, HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, TMC and Starz.

Including Video on Demand, FIOS is easily better choice for locals and entertainment, and it has all the sports I want. When football comes on the NFL channel this Thursday, we get the national NFL HD channel on FIOS-I don't think D* has it in HD.

The fiber optic signal is sent to us full bandwidth native rate out of the pipe-either 1080i or 720p for Fox and ABC only. The nationals are all 1080i. There is no 1080p, and no plan for 1080p, although my buddy tells me that fiber optic is the only technology presently in use with enough bandwidth to do that if they wanted to. All I know is that FIOS looks better on our three best Sony 1080p SXRD TVs, one 50", one 60" and one 70". I'm not sure I can tell any HD difference on our older Sony 720p, nor on my antique Pioneer 65"CRT (still a good TV, but looks softer than the LCD or SXRD, which is Sony's version of LCoS)-the SD looks a little better on FIOS on all the sets-not sure why.

I don't have it any more either. I got sick of their outragious increases every year. I am a sports junkie but I will pass up the NFL package, unless they make it more reasonable.

Sounds like the have a nice package put together. I just checked and the only area of Florida they have it is the Tampa area. I wish that we had it here instead of Brighthouse Network.

Thanks for all the info on FIOS.
