HD-Lite refers to a practice started by DirecTV and recently adopted by Dish Network (on VOOM HD channels) of reducing the original HD picture resolution from the standard 1920x1080i to 1280x1080i, esentially losing 1/3 of the pixel resolution.
Thanks for the correction, CPanther95. I was thinking about DBS companies, but you might be right that some cable companies may have started this even earlier than D*. It would be interesting to find out which company started doing it first!
I also consider the result of multi-casting HD-Lite, so if that meets the criteria, I'd bet the first broadcaster to fire up his digital transmitter was salivating over the possibility of multiple channels.
1920 * 1080 i = 2,073,600 Pixels
1440 * 1080 i = 1,555,200 Pixels A loss of 518,400 Pixels
1280 * 1080 i = 1,382,400 Pixels A loss of 691,200 Pixels from 1920 * 1080 I
1280 * 720 P = 921,600 pixels
Note: 1440 and 1280 * 1080 I are not industry standards set forth by the Grand Aliance
