I figured out how to make a pizza pan D-12 produce HD....Unhook the s video from your 46" tv and hook it to a 13" crt tv... LOL...the pic is so much sharper on the little 13" Ha Ha Ha:D:D:D

Thats an old fact, in the old days smaller CRT's looked sharper as the technology got better the larger CRT's had more sharpness.

The problem with feeding a SD signal into any HD display is it wont look as good as a true HD signal. This is because it's only 480i. Your tv upscales it to the native resolution (720p, 1080i or 1080p) Depending how good the circuitry is in the tv has allot to do with the finished product.

DirecTV SD isn't all that bad. They use a 20000 SR with a 6/7 FEC the 6/7 FEC is a good thing since it allows more bits to be allocated to the video than say 3/4.

I have been watching my D-11 for over 2 weeks now. I had to do some readjustments on my tv's as far as contrast, brightness, sharpness, color and tint to get good results. I run S video to my AQUOS 1080p and run composite video to my 27" Toshiba and JVC CRT's. The SD CRT's look sharper than my HD but thats because they are bottles and are 480i SD. I run my AQUOS in Smart Stretch mode. If I go to side bar it gets very close to the bottles.

While Direc won't look like a C band master it's also much better than what I used to see on G3 from NPS. The bottom line is were stuck and have to live with the reduced quality of pizza if we want cable channels especially after Jan 1st. We can go the HD lite route if we watch those channels allot but nothing will compare to what our big monsters sitting in our yards receiving all those SD & HD masters can give. Problem is what is better to see a message that says scrambled channel or see a reduced quality picture on pizza and get some enjoyment. If there is ever a way to get all those masters again unscrambled I will be first in line. :)

If your going to watch pizza and going to get an HD set here are a few pointers when buying. Resist buying larger than 32". Go for 720p vs 1080p (I should have did that) since 720 up converts less from 480 then 1080. Get a tv with a good scaler. The Sharp AQUOS has a good one. One last thing if you have all those fast motion features. Turn them off! All they do is blur the picture to cover artifacts. I run my Sharp in Slow not Fast, it does make a difference.

The other solution is stay with a CRT or grab one at a local thrift store. There are quite a few nice ones there lately I've seen and been tempted to grab one. SD CRT's will always look better on a 480i native resolution.

480 is 480, Period.
It will never look as good as any HD out there.
The smaller the screen the better with 480 SD.
Remember those old "big-screen" TV's before HD? Horrid...
...those things ALL looked like garbage, since you were blowing up the same junk 480 signal to the point where it had 1/8" black lines BETWEEN the lines of the video!!!!
