HDMI/CEC stopped working

We have three TVs, one on the Hopper3, one each on Wireless Joeys. The two on Joeys are both Samsung sets, one is 65" about 14 years old, the other 48" probably 8 or 9 years old.

Both sets were set up with HDMI/CEC. The usage I had was that when the TV was turned off, if I pressed the SAT button on the side of the remote, both the TV and the Joey (if in standby) would turn on. If the set was on and the TV was changed to an alternate input, ie, HDMI3 for Roku, pressing SAT would return the TV's input back to SAT (HDMI1).

When we moved to our new house and Dish relocated the system, the configuration (using the same TV and Joey) of the 48" set lost the HDMI/CEC mode and the SAT button now only controls which box the remote communicates with. If the tv is on one of the other inputs, pressing SAT changes the remote but does not change the TV back to the STB HDMI1. All control of power of the TV is using the power button only, and all input changes to go back to HDMI1 must be done manually.

Suddenly now, the other set, 65" Samsung, has also inherited this attribute. I don't know what happened or if I did anything but the 65" which would switch back from Roku to SAT by just pressing the SAT button, stopped working. Same as the other set - only the power button turns on the TV and no other HDMI/CEC modes work. It's strange because the 48" set started off that way, but the 65" set survived the move and was working.

I've reset the Joeys and reconfigured the TVs to be sure that HDMI/CEC is enabled. The "net" suggests turning CEC OFF then powering off the TV then powering it back on and finally enabling CEC. Didn't change anything. I toggled CEC mode on the JOEY (why is it an attribute of the remote? That makes no sense). Did the same thing - turned CEC off. unpaired remote, removed batteries, replaced batteries, paired remote, enabled CEC. Still nothing...

Ideas?

Is the use of the SAT button to do a "master power on" no longer supported?

PS. The set attached directly to the Hopper3 (not sure what it is) continues to work fine.

The SAT button is used to determine which device the remote is controlling; it does not power devices on and off. If CEC is configured properly in your Dish settings, and you have selected SAT, the power button will power the Dish Hopper/Joey and TV on and off simultaneously. When you press the power button the Hopper/Joey powers on or off and sends a signal (via CEC) to the TV to power on or off.

I have one of my Joeys set up with HDMI/CEC. I also hav an Apple TV set up on that TV the same way. Let's say I last watched the Apple TV and turned the TV off. I pick up my model 54 Dish remote paired to that Joey and press the Power button. The Joey turns on, the TV turns on and changes to the proper HDMI input for the Joey. I shut the system off using the dish remote pressing the power button. The TV shuts off and the Joey times out soon after. I never find a need to press the Sat button.

On both of mine if I had last used the Roku input and turn power off, the next time I hit the power button on the Dish remote, the TV comes on and stays on the Roku input... It does not change to the STB input.

I would reinitiate the CEC on your TVs as well as your Rokus and Joeys. I sometimes find that I have to shut the Joey or Apple off again and then turn it back on for the input to change. CEC is often wonky that way.

Just went through the process again.

Initial conditions: Watching DVR recording on 65" set with Wireless Joey.

Set remote to TV and use input button to change to Roku.

Mess around with Roku remote looking for James Bond movies :)

Press SAT button which used to return remote to SAT mode and switch TV to SAT HDMI input. Doesn't work.

The only way to get the SAT input was to go back to TV on remote, use input to select HDMI1 and go back to SAT button on remote...

This sequence worked fine until a few weeks ago.

Please try this, assume all units are turned off and you have CEC set up for all devices. Now pick up your Dish remote. Press Power, your Dish receiver should turn on as well as the TV and the TV should switch to the HDMI input that the Dish receiver is plugged into. Now press the Power button on the Dish remote and the TV should shut off and the Dish receiver should turn off after about 90 seconds (this is normal for theDish receiver.) After all is shut down pick up your Roku remote and press the Power button. Your Roku should turn on as well as the TV and the TV should change to the HDMI input that the Roku is plugged into. Roku is unusual in that you can't press the power button to turn it off. You have to wait for 20 minutes of inactivity for it to shut itself down (provided you have that set up in the Roku settings. Perhaps that is why you are using both remotes.

FIXED! You're not going to believe this...

I was blaming the HDMI cable and so swapped cables to the Joey. No change...

Then I read the info on the Roku and it has a HDMI/CEC mode that I'd never used."Press any button on Roku remote to start up Roku and change to HDMI port." Enabled it and it didn't work either... Hmmm... No cable so it can't be the cable.

The only common thing is the TV set so I googled "Samsung tv hdmi/cec broken" and found a topic that suggested powering off the TV (actually they said power strip, so I assume they mean everything attached).

So I powered off the power strip. Everything down. Left it for 5 minutes while I took the cover off the pool (water is 93*).

Turned strip back on.

HDMI CEC now working on both Joey and Roku. As advertised on the Roku, pressing any button on the remote should switch to the Roku HDMI port. Now it does.

Then while it is in Roku mode, pressing SAT returns the TV to the Dish HDMI port.

Turn TV off with Dish remote power button. Pressing SAT button on remote turns on TV and switches to Dish input.

The new boot also displays "HDMI CEC" at the top of the screen during the switch. It had done that before but it all went away when CEC stopped working.

So Samsung has a bug. Honestly, I'd now powered off (removed AC power) from the TV since we moved in.

Now I'll try it on the other set...
