HDTV Resolution Question

After reading the many posts about HD Lite, I found myself agreeing. Then while reading yesterdays BestBuy ad, I noticed that most of the HDTVs that they sell are advertised with resolution in the area of 1280 X 720 (some were marginally higher).

Can someone please enlighten me...What (if any) effect would a higher resolution signal from E* have on a set than is rated 1280 X 720?

watching HD-Lite or True 1920x1080i HDTV is not going to show as big a difference on a 720p set, it is there and in a major way but not as bad as a true 1080i/1080p set

Thanks for the info, I'm starting to understand resolutions a bit better. The link to the .pdf file was quite informative. I opened up my calculator and noticed that 1280 X 720 (I assume 720p) is the same ratio as 1920 X 1080 (I assume 1080i except for the newer high dollar sets)...which is of course 16:9. I should have done the math earlier...maybe it would have helped.

So, am I correct in assuming that anything less than 1920 X 1080 or 1280 X 720 should be considered HD Lite? (And since my JVC is 1080i...I'm going to notice this more than on a native 720 set?)

Exactly! :)
