If a broadcaster owns 5 channels and he won't sell one to a provider unless they buy all five, why would he permit the provider to sell them individually when that would cost the broadcaster ad revenue? The provider would have to sell all 5 as a package deal.

um, yes, that (bundled channels) is exactly the system we have now. Alacarte would mean that the channels can be subscribed to separately.. and that is the decision of the channel/content owners, not the cable/sat company (which are stuck with bundling/packages for now)

Do you all really want to pay $20 for a channel ?

no.. and I wouldn't.

And I'm perfectly fine ending what is essentially socialism for TV channels.... the bundles allow the spendiest channels (ie. ESPN) to survive in a pyramid-like scheme, and allow worthless channels (do we have a basket-weavingHD channel yet) to exist. I'd like to see both type of channels have to make it on their own merits.

It is funny to me that you have to tack on negative terms (socialism, pyramid-scheme) and make up a channel (basket weaving) to make that argument.

Bundling is how this industry works, I don't see the per-channel fight being fought by the consumer anytime soon and remain a battleground for the producers and providers for the foreseeable future.

TBC = Turner Broadcasting Channel = haha

These startus trying to get into the IPTV market would be another middle man like Dish/Direct/Cable. Perhaps if they offered something on Roku direct to the consumer then they would get an increased revenue while offering programming for less (for a little while until they are just as high as it is now).

There are plenty of real channels I could have named.. simpler not to pick a channel and find that 3 of it's 4 watchers are here in the forum. Folks don't talk about "500 channels and nothing on" for no reason.

As for the terms, laugh as much as you'd like... the terms are reasonably accurate for the current business model.

EDIT: and it's always possible both could co-exist.. ie. full alacarte + alacarte where the provider has mini-package deals (ie. buy 2 of our channels, get 10% off.. buy 3 get 20% off, etc).. and even still with cable/sat pkgs of 40/60/100 channels... but the consumer could buy that 40 ch pkg and then add on 2-5 other channels they wanted from the higher tier pkgs, presumably for less than subscribing to the entire upper tier pkg. Point being that right now.. you can't (in most cases.. yes, there are _some_ "add-on" channels.. but not ESPN, TNT, USA, NatGeo, etc)

Directv vs TBS

Anyone know if they reached a deal? I had an email at work saying the negotiation are on going and they agreed to an extension to 2pm (yesterday) as of last night the stations are still on. So that's a positive sign.

I say they resolve it since they extended it which is good but if not I don't see it lasting long knowing DirecTV history of disputes they don't last long most of the time!! imo :)

Or they don't happen to begin with! :) I am glad an agreement was reached with no disruption to the end user. Hopefully we will see this more often.

Same here and I didn't think there would be a disruption either but if there was liek I said it would be a short one knowing DirecTV history!! :)
