Heavy data use detected after connecting receiver to internet

While I use DISH to receive TV signals, I use Comcast's internet service.

In the past couple of weeks, I've seen my internet usage spike and it seems to coincide with the time I connected my DISH DVR to my home WiFi (secured) network.

I don't download movies from DISH, and am wondering if the DVR downloads lots of data in the background.

Has anyone else noticed this? Or figured a way around it (other than disconnecting the receiver from the WiFi network).

TIA!

My 722k is connected to my DSL through the router and I've noticed no increase in traffic. Unless it's doing stuff in the middle of the night....

It's probably downloading VOD movies in the background and will do so occasionally when Dish puts up new shows.

How r u monitoring inet usage? Do u have anyway of logging usage by ip address? That would let u know for sure what is going on. Of course the other possiblity is that your security key is compromised and a neighbor is using ur inet.

I'm checking through the Comcast website. Monitoring usage through IP address is a good idea, though I don't have an easy way of doing that on my Mac.

Since the WiFi network is password-protected, chances are slim someone else is using it.

Yes, VOD movies on channel 501 (or channel 1) are PUSHED via satellite, not broadband internet. On line content is PULLED by the customer from Dish Cinema and TV shows.

What kind of security protocol are you using? If it's WEP, it would be extremely easy for someone to get your password.

wire shark is a good app to watch your data also if you could set a pc as a server and put your comcast in one nic then bridge it to another nic and use the other nic to feed your router you can see if the trafic is coming off your network or if your modem has been cloned.

The receiver is constantly contacting the Dish server. I see this in my router log all the time: =vlan1 SRC=192.168.1.149 DST=8.7.94.155 LEN=32 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=63 ID=0 DF PROTO=UDP SPT=1061 DPT=30123 LEN=12

8.7.94.155 is in Cheyenne.

AFAIK, you need some software running on your router in order to get an accurate picture. Your router would also need to be able to run alternate firmware like DD-WRT. If someone knows a pure software solution to this I would be really interested.

look how small the data is. it's just the call home ping. 32 bytes

I'm familiar with the software, but I've only used it to sniff data packets not track how much traffic all the nodes on the network are sending/recieving.

Yea, even if it does it all day long this won't be the cause of any excessive rise in data usage. I use OpenDNS for my DNS servers instead of my ISP's and they have stat tracking that shows you all the DNS requests that happen on the network. Dish Network receivers used to make a stupid amount of DNS requests, I haven't looked to see if this is still case.

Other than wanting to know is there a specific issue?
Another un scientific but fairly effective option is turn off or un plug ALL computers and other devices, smart phones, gaming consoles, etc. Turn them back on one at a time. Note the order and then check the log.

The 722k has a warning page that says you'll be responsible for bandwidth usage and it makes you agree before it will download in videos. I've had it hooked up to internet since we got it (probably about a year ago) and it's never used any more bandwidth than the monthly 'call' to dishnetwork for subscription validation and a few times where I scheduled a DVR recording over internet. I monitor the bandwidth because my particular router (Cradlepoint) has logging capabilities.

As long as you don't select/accept the warning message, it will not download any videos via internet. (I wish the XBox360 had that option. That thing downloads all kinds of garbage without your knowledge.)

I have my router (and everything except the dvr and my antenna amp) on a wireless on and off switch and turn it off every night. Save a little on electricity also.
