Hulu's new guide provides fast access to live TV

Hulu has gradually improved access to its live TV service over the past year. Now, however, it's ready for a proper overhaul. The streaming provider has launched a new live TV guide that promises speedier access to channels. If you have an Amazon Fire TV, a recent Apple TV, a Nintendo Switch or an Xbox One, you can quickly see what's airing (including your most recently viewed channels) and either watch or record them. You'll also find a lightning bolt near the home icon that jumps directly to live TV on the last channel you watched. Needless to say, that could prove a time-saver if you're a sports fan who usually returns to the same channel.

As you might have noticed, the device list has conspicuous omissions like smart TVs and Roku players. Hulu has promised expanded support "soon," though, so it's ultimately a matter of time. And the guide by itself reflects Hulu's shifting priorities -- live TV is now on more equal footing with its on-demand counterpart.

Tried it out on my fire when I got home, and I say this fixes the biggest gripe I had with the service.

If you have hulu anyway, this is a VERY compelling option for OTT TV.

Hulu, like YouTube tv offers all four of the main locals for me now, which is also a big plus.

Vue had one Directv now and sling had none

Has pq improved or stayed the same?
What’s the frame rate with Hulu tv?
I cant really tell a difference in PQ than before on the channels I watched. I had heard that they did add a few more at 60fps, but the ones I did watch were still at 30. So there was to my eyes a noticeable difference swapping back and forth between the softball games on Hulu and YTTV. Hulu wasnt all that bad, but YT was definitely smoother.

I will check more channels this evening.

I heard that even if you pay the $15/mo. extra to fast-forward commercials on Hulu Live TV, there are still certain shows that don't allow it. Is that true? I'd almost be willing to pay $20 over what I'm currently paying for YouTubeTV to have that ability again now that YTTV as greatly restricted it for almost all prime time TV, on the networks and cable channels.

I could not tell you, as I am not paying the fee. I have considered it, but I would like to know before I did it.

Is VOD commercial free library available with Hulu tv or you locked in to the VOD with ads?

To get the on demand library commercial-free, do you only pay $3.99 on top of the $40, or do you pay the full $11.99?
Since the live tv comes with the on demand library to start with, you only pay the difference between the "limited commercial" plan and the commercial free plan. And the difference is $3.99

So the total with live tv and the commercial free library is $43.99

That’s not a bad deal. Especially if other providers keep taking away recordings and making you choose VOD with ads. I don’t mind a few ads but some can get carried away with 3-5 at a time within a 10 minutes span.

My problem is regular Hulu doesn't carry most of my shows (so no commercial-free version of those if I pay the extra $4). And Hulu Live TV doesn't have the AMC channels (though it does have Fear the Walking Dead and Preacher in regular Hulu).

AMC is a big hold up for me as well, however if everything else works well, I could do without and just buy those by episode.

I thought about that too. But if I end up paying $59 for Hulu Live TV with fast-forwarding add-on ($15) and commercial-free regular Hulu (plus buying some shows), I'm probably better off just buying the shows I can't fast-forward with YouTube TV; that is, if I can't wait for them to come to Netflix or Prime (the ones that still do). It's not that many shows, really. And I can still fast-forward sports and other non-on-demand content with YTTV for $35/mo.

Just have to do the math.

Yttv still has better pq than hulu for now too, so I will likely stick with them for now.

It's fantastic having so many options though. Even with the limitations of most.
