information on how satellite works?

I like to know how all my technology works. I know the extreme basics, The dish picks up the signal from the satellite. I was wondering were I can get information on what spot beams are if theres a deferents with them and the Satellite, if there all the same, ext. ext. What transponders are and what they do. What the check switch does, why you need separate cables from the dish, any any thing else that might be pertinent.
