I checked with a local dealer to buy Directv. He wanted about $185 to install a system. How long a run of Coax do you get with free installation which Directv is offering along with the HD DVR AT $199. He said I would have to pay $1.50 a foot if the dish couldn't be put on the house. I have decided to wait and try to get some answers.

I'm pretty sure the DirecTV website says 125 feet of RG/6 per tuner.

You should call DirecTV themselves and not a local reseller.
He was marking right from the site of the pole to the house so there wasn't any free line that was going to be installed.

Yeah, I was going to order on line but because you can never tell what kind of outfit will show up. I figured better locally because if I had problems, it could be faster to get them fixed.

This morning I purchased Directv from the web site and its supposed to be installed on Jan 10th. I may have to pay for a small over run of cable but nothing like the local dealer was going to charge me.

Another question! When whomever installs my system, locates the site, do they install on a wood pole or a steel pole? It can't be on my house because of a couple of trees but outside that area is clear. I perfer a steel pole in concrete. Should I do that myself or will the installer?
I know where to put it, because of the local dealer that first came out.

Steel pole. 2" outside diameter if they are installing slimline, which I assume is what they are doing since this is posted in HD section.

Does the installer do that? Your answer was clear on the type of pole but not clear if I should or them. I had rather leave most of it to them, but I have installed before. Don't want a large installation cost with this.

The installer should do it. As long as there is no signal from the roof (standard mount) then a pole mount would be free (at least that is how most work). Installer should have quik-crete and a 6 ft pole in the truck. You are allowed 125 ft of cable per tuner and they will charge extra if they have to run over that. Also, if they have to bury cable you will see a fee. My suggestion, just offer to bury the cable yourself and he probably will not worry if he has to run a little extra cable.

If there is no Line of Sight from the house then a pole-mount is free of charge from the Home Service Provider usually. If the installer CAN get a line of sight from some point on your house but you still prefer it on a pole there may be labor charges for the pole-mount as it is not considered a standard installation. The amount of the charge is usually set by the HSP but whether to charge it or not is usually at the sole discretion of the installer. For the Ka/Ku Slimline a 2" aluminum pipe-pole is normally used. Sunk into the ground between 30" and 36" and concrete around it. The installer should do a thorough site evaluation with you at the time of the installation to determine the options and what would work best for your situation.

For me personally, I hate trenching cable. It's time consuming, I just don't like doing it. When I run into a situation where a customer may want a pole-mount, I inform them of the charges they may incur, then say something like "However, if you would be willing to bury the cable on your own, I won't charge you"

Saves me a lot of time when doing pole-mounts LOL though I did run into one last week where the guy wanted his dish 200 ft down hill his backyard slope, behind a little storage shed, simply for the fact he didn't want to see the dish in any shape fashion or form from his house. Though I wasn't exactly looking forward to it, I was professional and didn't grumble, he even helped me do it and I knocked his fee down to 1/2 ^^
