:hatsoff:

Hi, this is the view from my 4th floor balcony. I was wanting to get a 36" dish & a motor for FTA & I'm wondering if I won't be able to catch certain Sat's?

Thanks for your comments

I live in Montreal, Canada

Nice picture, below are all the angles to the satellites. From there you will be able to work out the elevation / line of sight to the satellites that you can see.

You can make yourself an inclinomter........

You have a limited view of the Clarke Belt, the problem with balconies is usually whats above the dish more than whats in front of it.

PSB,

In your opinion, is it worth doing or should I absolutely have it on the roof? There is another balcony above me...

Thanks

Sometimes the roof is the ONLY option. Even if there were nothing above you, you still only have a partial view of the Clarke Belt, then add to that the overhang. I would do a roof mount as you want to see as MANY satellites as you can after going to this bother. I think if you install on the balcony you may end up moving it to the roof eventually anyway!

The farther north you are the lower the dish needs to be so as PSB noted, the roof may be the only option. I have mine on the roof because my deck is on the North side of the house. Being in MN (45N 93.5W) the highest the dish gets is 38.5 degrees. If we were farther south, the elevation is like 45-50 which can clear much more :)
