The land of the dead
At one time, if you were into quality HDTV, Dish was the only option. Sadly, Dish is now more about quantity than quality.

My 622 has been a PITA since day one - actually, make that day 24, when the HDMI connection broke. I contacted Dish a couple of times and got nothing but grief. Folks here say you may have to call numerous times to get the 'right' person who has some understanding of the issue- I SAY THAT'S BULLSH_T. As a customer who shells out over $100 a month, I should not have to go hunting for a 'knowledgeable' Dish representative - I should a get satisfactory response on my first call. Anything less is unacceptable.

Now, every time I turn on the 622, I get a check switch screen. I run through the process, and no problem. THEN WHY DO I KEEP GETTING A CHECK SWITCH? And then there are the dropouts - both video and audio - whether watching live or recorded. And the timers that fire off incorrectly, if at all. And on and on, as it all is well documented here. Isn't everyone tired of paying Dish to be a BETA tester?

In addition to the ongoing technical issues, then there is the value factor. Right now, Verizon's FIOS Premium beats Dish's Top 200 in many ways, including extended History/Discovery channels that are only available with Dish's Top 250 package, PLUS A TON OF HD CHANNELS AT NO EXTRA CHARGE. Frankly I won't miss the VOOM channels that come with the Dish $20 HD surcharge - most are crap in my humble opinion, both technically (compression) and content-wise.

Dish loves its little extra fees, such as DVR service fee - won't see that with FIOS. Also, I now get SHO/HBO for $22 a month - with FIOS, I'll get SHO/HBO/CINEMAX/STARZ/ENCORE/FLIX/TMC/SUNDANCE for $23.98. Does anyone here need a definition of the word VALUE? Didn't think so. BTW, this includes the corresponding HD channels as well.

Along with 2 HD PVRs (right now I've got the 501 and 622), my monthly bill with FIOS would be a few dollars less that my current setup with Dish.
Two words: NO BRAINER.

But there is a catch. See, I'm still committed (hate that word) to Dish until mid-October. And if I break the contact, well that pisses ol' Charlie off, because he's counting on that steady income, so I'll get penalized. OK, so I call up Dish today, and talk to Tim - account specialist. Tim has great people skills, because he acknowledged all the points I've brought up in this thread. He made a feeble attempt to sweeten my current package deal, but I told him throwing more channels in the mix for the next 10 months is not added VALUE - it's a carrot, and there is a BIG DIFFERENCE.

As for the ongoing technical issues, he has agreed to sending out a technician at no cost to review my setup (I can't wait  ), and if he cannot permanently fix my ongoing technical problems, Dish will cancel the contract. I'm OK with this, because here is the expected scenario:
The clown - oops, I mean technician - comes out, checks everything, and says it all meet specs. Fine. The next moment I experience a dropout/reboot/glitch, I'm on the phone to Tim. Maybe he will keep sending folks out to my house until the day my contract is up - fine with me - it will cost me nothing. In fact, I will greatly enjoy burning through Charlie's bonus, because the day my contract is up is the day I drop Dish.

Now I expect the Dish fanbois to point out the problems they've heard about FIOS - fine, I give you permission to gloat if you wish. But my gut instincts tell me that FIOS is the promised land, as Dish continues to compromise it's once significant lead in quality and service.

Bu-Bye ;)

Boy I guess I must be one of the lucky ones. I've been a Dish customer since 96 and I cant remember ever having a problem except for a remote that took a crap for my 3000 receiver. I have had my 622 for about 3-4 months now and I think its a good receiver. I also think the HD pictures are great compared to the standard channels.

Oh well good luck in the future, the grass isn't always greener on the other side. I have seen LOTS of people come back after they try another service then they cry because they cant get the "NEW" customer deals.

if you get a good tech that will take his time he will fix the problems and then you should be happy but if you get some jo blow that has only been ther 3months or a tech who just dont care than it sucks to be you(no affence)

I have 4 of them, and all of them have been working great since day one. Guess I am lucky too.

Scott, luck has nothing to do with it.
BTW, love the new SatGuys shirts - might have to get one. :D

As I read the long FIOS thread over at AVS, it verifies that FIOS has the best picture going right now (download a couple of the spreadsheet to verify the numbers - FIOS is quite impressive. And important for us that have front projectors with big screens.

FIOS does have the best PQ possible, if were available here I would get it. However if your not happy with the 622, your going to HATE their DVR. It is very buggy and is missing a lot of the features that you enjoy on your 622.

I know some people that moved to FIOS and came back to Dish just because of the DVR.

The 622 is also better then the DirecTV HR20, however the software on the HR20 is making it better but its still not all the way there yet. :)

The shirts are very nice, especially for a high quality polo shirt like this, I was actually kind of surprised at the quality of the shirts when I got the samples in.

Scott,
This is what I want from the DVR:
1) Select a show form the guide
2) Select one-time or multiple timers
3) Then, go to menu to find recorded show and play it back.

Kinda like my trusty 501 and my Sony OTA. What more does one need? See, being able to get locals OTA has spoiled me as far as picture quality.
And don't forget: VALUE

I thought you switched to FIOS quite some time ago? Let me know what your bill really is for all 3 services with taxes. I want unlimited phone, at least 5/2 internet and HD DVR with SHOHD and HBOHD pay channels. Its available here and I am about an inch away from getting it. The kicker is no additional storage with verizon FIOS. If they had that I would be beating down their door. I may anyway who knows.:(

Verby:
Her's my quote from Verizon

FIOS Premier 200 42.99 FIOS VA BEACH CHANNEL
FIOS Movies 12.99
FIOS HBO 15.99
HD PVR (2) 25.98
DISCOUNT 5.00

Total 92.95
Probably be right at 100 with taxes. They stick it to ya keeping HBO seperate. It would still be a lot cheaper for me to go FIOS and Id get a heck of a lot more than I do now with D*. Right now I own my HDTIVO and get the HD pack, total choice something or other and HBOHD and SHOHD and pay I think $104.00. For that I get a terrible HD offering and lousy PQ.

I do agree with the OP that Dish customer service is pretty bad. I seem to have to email CEO to get anything done. Most reps want to send a tech for things like a bad 622.

My current 622 has been excellent. It did take 6 or 7 RMA's but they seem to have finally got it right. I did miss the 4.xx fun as I do not get home very often but the current version seems pretty good.

Naperville, IL has WOW and Comcast so I may have to give WOW a shot once I get a new place. Otherwise I see myself staying with Dish. They definitely have one of the best (if not the best) DVR's out and it looks like they have their future plans coming along quite well.

*sigh* You can really only say the same thing so many times before you decide people aren't listening.

1. DISH does NOT cancel contracts. You'll either being paying 13.33 a month out, or you'll drop and those nice hundreds will pile on. Phone reps (despite what they say) have no way to let you out of a contract. Not in their wettest dreams.

2. True dat on the service calls. But I would think after the fourth someone will get bored and say they won't send anyone else. Consistency isn't a DISH strong suit, until you start using Chuck's money.

3. FIOS shmios.

Hey JMikeF. You've been posting for quite some time and I'm sure you know what is the best deal for you. Some cable providers have come a long way over the years. (some have not) Dish still beats the cable providers where I am in Connecticut and Florida hands down. I do not have HD other than OTA, but I do have Dish 250, (includes the theme movie channels) HBO and Cinemax, Distants, Superstations, and three DVR's. (508's) for just about the same price you are quoted with Verizon.
Because we have cable where I work (in CT), and it is fiber optic, I can tell you the locals on cable are terrible compared to Dish, and we lose cable at work a few times a year. I almost never lose the signal with Dish. The final American Idol was not seen in parts of Eastern Connecticut because of a cable outage. But again, each area is different, and if you don't like it you can always to back to Dish or get Direct.
How can you live without Charlie Chats?? :)

Well, the conversation was recorded, I have his name and a 3 letter code.
Dish Smich. ;)

My two owned 622s (leased 942 and 811 for that matter) have worked perfectly with the exception of two failed HDMIs, but both units were replaced under warranty in 2-3 days. Likewise, my equipment has worked smashingly for more than two years. I am sorry to hear about your bad experiences with the 622, but I've tried several and it's the best HD DVR on the market IMO.

DishHD-Lite is another story...they do NOT offer the best HD, but they still offer the best HD value on the market at this time. FiOS has been three miles way for the past 9 months, but I doubt it will be available in my neck-of-the-woods for another two years. I would ditch E* in a hearbeat for FiOS TV because the HD picture quality...it cannot be beat. However, I will miss the 622 - it is one of the best pieces of electronic equipment we have ever owned. Let's just hope the next generation FiOS DVR is vastly improved.

I have had two 622s since their introduction. Last week the HDMI went out on one. One phone call and a UPS 2nd day air delivery later I have my replacement 622 up and running with no problems. I guess I've been lucky too. Also, I been a valued customer for 11 years and have not been hassled by the company once. Again, lucky I guess. The shade of green of grass on my side of the fence is just fine thank you. :D
