The city of Lebanon will begin offering high-definition cable channels and digital video recorders to its cable customers.

The new channels include ESPN HD, Discovery Hi-Def, two iN Demand high definition channels, HD Net, HD Movies, and 4 WECT PBS channels. They would be offered to consumers as a package and cost $6.95 a month.

The digital video recorders would cost $6.95 a month, and enable consumers to record two programs simultaneously. Consumers with new recorders would also be able to watch one program while recording another at the same time.

Telecom director Darrick Zucco said the new services and tuners will be available Aug. 1. City council members approved the services Monday night.

Zucco expects high demand because viewers will get the opportunity to watch concerts, sporting events and movies in high-definition.

In other business, Lebanon City Council also approved renovation of the courtroom. No city tax money will be used. Instead, $130,000 from the Municipal Court Special Project Fund will pay for the $97,400 renovations. The remaining money plus an additional $20,000 in state funding in the Computer Improvement Fund will be used to purchase security equipment, including an X-ray machine and a metal detector.

The renovations will make the courtroom accessible for the disabled and comply with the federal Americans With Disabilities Act.
