More HD Primetime content, NOW!?

With DishNet and DirecTV moving towards trying to deliver MANY local market's HDTV content via satellite, seems like there should be a better way to manage that much capacity. After all, in general during primetime everyone in the east/central time zones are viewing the exact same network prime time programming, except for the local commercials. Ditto for mountain and west coast viewers. I am sure they plan to use MANY satellite spot beams for the local markets. If they could figure out a way to use a national beam, that would significantly lower the cost of delivering local primetime HDTV/SD programming (maybe free with any package, haa) and allow the none duplicated satellite capacity to be used for other primetime programming like movie channels etc. I do not have the answer to the local commercial problem, as it relates to the must carry FCC rules, but it seems like a lot of capacity is being wasted which translates into to a very high costs for the Satellite provider which of course gets passed along to us the consumers. I for one would be happy with a black screen during the local commercial time slots, but the local affiliates across the nation would have a COW. Since the satellite provider receivers could all be designed to receive local programming via an antenna maybe that could satisfiy must carry (never in a million years). In the past, must carry did not even apply you either received the local broadcasts or nothing if you were beyond the broadcast area.

Just read VOOM is going belly up Apr 30th! When are the remaining satellite providers going to wake and sell HD premium programming alacarte?

Where did you see anything about Dish SERIOSULY trying to offer local HD via Sattelite?
Only Direct is.

Maybe it is only DirecTV but my point still stands. <End>

Thanks for your comments.

It wouldn't be all that shocking if E* put the rest of the NYC locals up on 61.5 when they get the V* tp's. Especially considering WCBS-DT is already there.

But hasn't Charlie said in the past that new HD wouldn't be on 61.5, heck he even moved most of it off 61.5 to 110/119? He'd also tick off the west coast folks if he didn't also add the LA feeds so they're not left out.

Well, Direct IS GOING to launch more satelliteds for HD locals.
Dish paid over 200 million for one already up there. Duh, ya think it's for HD locals???

Mountain time viewers have network shows at the same local time as Central. Thus they are delayed an hour from the Eastern and Central feed and 2 hours earlier than the Pacific feed. (There are exceptions for some UPN/WB/PBS programming.)

Just for what it is worth.
