so say i want to have 4 sats pointed at different locations so i can maximize the channels i get. What type of switch do i need to join them all into one line. so 4 lines in and just one coming in the house. Will a 6x8 work for this? or even a 4x8? im a dtv tech and have a bunch of good used stuff i have removed and replaced with new on installs.

since you only have 1 receiver then all you need is a 4x1 DiseqC switch. for more receivers then use the Direct TV approved 4x4 Zinwell switch . you need 2 of those for 4 Dish to feed up to 4 receivers.

Switches Simplified FAQ:

If you have one receiver, this post will show you how to get up to eight LNBs switched your way.

If you have multiple receivers, then you need dual-output LNBs, and this post will show you how to wire it.

Of course, there are other ideas and methods, depending on exactly what you need to do.
The DirecTV 6x8 multiswitch is not usable by FTA receivers beyond a 4x8, as they cannot control the extra two inputs the way a DirecTV receiver can.

For general knowledge and help, even if you don't need the mod, this thread is a wealth of info on multiswitches:
Pendragon mods a 4x8 multiswitch for high voltage on both ports:
