I just scored 2 free hughesnet dishes on freecycle.org !! Not sure if they have the LNB's or not will find out when I pick them up later
:D:D

If they are missing the LNB's, or I decide to do the multiple LNB setup, which type (I know I want linear but I mean what brand/model) LNB would work best for these elliptical dishes?

sweet

Most LNB's will work if there is one missing. The spot is usually a 25mm hole so you might have to do some "stripping" of the case on the LNB. The casing is just show and I've done that numerous times to LNB"s

Hopefully the feedhorns will still be attached if the LNBs are gone. You want to try to use the feedhorns designed for these dishes, since they are elliptical. If they were round, it wouldn't matter as much. A generic LNBF would still work, but not as well as the original feedhorn with a bolt-on LNB would.

As for LNBs, I'd slap on Dish FSS stacked LNBs (Eagle Aspen P870s) if the original feeds are still attached. Stacked LNBs give you both H and V polarities down the same cable simultaneously.

I have finally reached the conclusion that I need a 4 or 6 ft C band dish to get the networks on Galaxy 16 at 99.0°W. We have a free buy-sell & trade paper here called the Bulletin Board. The ad I just placed reads, WANTED: Your old eyesore of a satellite dish. Call 555-XXXX.
Every time I place an ad like that I get a lot of calls. People begging me to come get their old satellite dishes and gear for free or even willing to pay me.
Over the years I've gotten 10 Primestars and a 10 ft C-band. Had to leave the C-band dish when I moved.
Give it a shot, you might be surprised at the results. :)

Ice's dishes are always ready for more LNBF's

Gotta admit something Berg. You have a way of adapting things and making them work in the environment your in. You need to win the Satellite Guys award for that. :D

Just picked up the dishes. One is an older Direcway dish and has the LNB and transmitter. The other is a pretty new Hughesnet dish without the LNB, but it has the feedhorn on it. I just emailed the lady to see if maybe she had the LNB, but forgot it or something. Can't wait to get home and clean them up!

Most of us know what a DirecWay dish is, but that HughesNet is less common.
Post some pictures for the gang. - :up
Use your tape measure while you're at it.

I'm just waiting for the first guy to suggest: mini-BUD! - :D

Hughesnet is the same, Direcway just changed their name. The dishes are also the same, but Hughesnet are grey instead of white. I'll take some pics tonight of the 2 side-by-side with a tape measure. I'll also take a pic of my mounted Hughesnet dish that is a work in progress (just need to align).

I was thinking about the whole 'mini-BUD' thing earlier LOL. Was thinking that if I ever get all 3 dishes mounted next to each other I should get my girlfriend (I have no artistic abilities :)) to do some kind of continuous art across them. Maybe some flames; that would be awesome! Probably would never happen, though, but it's a good idea!

:EDIT:
Here's some pics of my first Hughesnet dish that just needs to be aligned (the one I mentioned above):

The transmitter is gone; that's why the black tape is on the feedhorn, to cover the mounting holes from it.

The pics are freakin huge so take awhile to load. I forgot my resolution was all the way up when I took the pics :P

Here's my DirecWay dish. It's 39x23 inches.
The HughesNet dishes (I've seen) are taller. :)
Neither really looks like your dish.

And it's just possible, as with "Primestar" dishes, that they deploy different dishes to different parts of the country.
Or, maybe under new management, they've changed dishes... along with their logos.

So, it's always useful to post a picture, 'cause even though we think we know what you're talking about... maybe we don't. - - :D

Here are the pics of the dishes I got. The direcway is 39x23 and the Hughesnet is 36x26. I thought I took a pic with the tape measure of both dishes, but apparently I only did it for the Direcway dish. I may trade the Direcway dish for another dish. A guy I work with wants it b/c it has a transmitter on it. He has his amateur radio license (I don't know what level) so I'm assuming he has some project he wants it for. He said he thinks the dish he wants to trade is bigger than 31" and has a LNB. If not then no trade!

That white dish is same one Anole and I have, and I think, Dee in Tx also. It surprises me how well it works on fta, with the normal lnbf that came with it. To me it just doesn't look big enough to work as well as it does. Mine's pointed at AMC9 but not plugged in to the switch right now.

That white Direcway is the same as the one in my Avatar.

Original owner painted it green. Did a nice job too.

Other than the HEAVY mount, it is close to the best Ku dish I have.
I was shocked to find out it was a dual-polarity Rx LNB.

On 97W right now and I get 72% on Verticals and 73%-76% on Horizontals with my Coolsat 5000
Compare that to my ChannelMaster 75e which I almost never could get above 73%
