NASA Hubble Service Mission Launch

I've got the Live SD feed tuned in right now.. I'm going to watch it Live. If I wasn't watching it Live, I'd be tempted to try PVR the HD feed on my Visionsat receiver to watch it on the PC later.. But, since I'm watching it Live, I'm just PVRing the SD feed on 72 West.

what an awesome launch

I recorded the Shuttle launch today on my VCR while I was at work and played it back while I ate my dinner. The recording turned out great - very clear images and sound. I was very impressed with the multiple camera views of the launch including the camera by the booster rockets.

What's a VCR? Just kidding, of course ;) Seriously, though, that early-afternoon launch looked great in the Florida sun. I caught the events of the day during the hourly Flight Day Highlights replay earlier this morning. Still confined to the 119w Dish Network NASA TV "SD-lite" uplink :( ... Gotta get my BUD up!

Good luck Atlantis! :up

I can't believe how steady and clear the video is from the camera that is looking "down" the shuttle during the blastoff and orbit insertion. That must be a pricey piece of hardware.

And good luck indeed for this mission, some significant (even more than usual) risks this time. :up

I watched this too, but had to watch one of the repeat video segments later on that night. I just have the little dish too, to watch the 119w signal. I can only imagine how good that would look with a BUD signal.

I wish I had the property to put up a BUD to get it. I have a 92" screen, so it would look amazing I imagine. lol. Almost like being right there.

I was also enjoying some of the camera angles... the rockets firing was impressive, and I thought the same thing about the camera looking back at Earth, on the side of the shuttle. It was very clear. You'd expect it would be more out of focus.

I've been watching the Hubble mission on the web and the announcer just mentioned something about a Ku band download of data from the telescope. Does any one know anything more about this?

NASA uses a Ku-Band antenna mounted on the shuttle to send data and video to TDRS satellites, then to the ground. As far as I know, we can't receive the TDRS satellites directly using standard FTA gear.

Yup, you'll find Ku is an often-used term while watching NASA TV during missions.

There's a Ku antenna deployed from the payload bay that serves two purposes. First, it is the rendezvous radar. Second, it is used to send Ku-band signals to the TDRS satellites, which relay to the ground. However, depending on where the TDRS satellites are in regards to the shuttle, there's not always Ku coverage. Since Ku is the only method of communication they have that has enough bandwidth for live video, they'll talk about "having Ku" or "no Ku" in reference to whether or not they will have live video downlink at the time. Certain parts of orbits have no Ku because of the way the vehicle is in relation to the TDRS satellites - in some cases (more common on ISS missions) it is because the vehicle itself blocks the path from the Ku antenna to the satellite.

When not in Ku coverage, downlink is limited to voice and S-band still images. If you're watching NASA TV, they usually show a shot of Mission Control when there is no Ku.

Ku is also what they use to downlink video and data that has been recorded (such as the HD camcorder videos), so that's probably the call you heard.

No way you can get it though, as all TDRS communications are encrypted.

Ku band download of data from the telescope That is one of the things they are replacing. No data down load from Hubble. No Pictures..... From what I understand That module that sent data down prior to this fix was on a backup?

Considering the nature of the repairs and upgrades these guys are doing - should be "Gold Star" sat guys!

Have watched most of the EVA's and the repair work - these guys definitely rock and I'd gladly give some very dear to me body parts for a shuttle ride.

I missed the launch but watched the grab to Hubble the other day! I for the most part never miss a Shuttle Launch but was out of town on launch day! Got to see the underside Shuttle check downlinks though and will be watching the return home!

The launch and landing seems to be the best part! I need to get another DVD Recorder for both of the el-cheap~o’s (ILO Brand From Wal-Fart) I bought some time back have since died! I have a Stereo VHS unit that quit recently and really have not have had anything to record with since.

Now my CNX Mini has PVR capabilities but never once bothered getting an external hard drive or it yet, owned it about a year now! It works fine with a USB stick records nice and clear but have really no need for that option though. Can’t store too much on a Flash Drive with it!

I am using the Fortec Star Dynamic more than that STB anyway!

I guess I will get a 200 gigabyte external drive or bigger for it sometime soon but really liked the DVD recorder! May just spring for another one instead!

I will remember to watch that landing though!

Love those night landings the best!

Hubble

I was on pins and needles waiting for Atlantis to release the newly reburbished Hubble. Those guys had worked so hard upgrading all the old equipment on board.

Just think. In a couple of months we'll all be seeing new pictures of what the new Hubble is seeing from space.

Isn't this a truly amazing world? And with all our faults here in the US the space program is one glimmer of hope for all of us.

Beam me up, Scotty!:D:D:D

I just got back from Las Vegas a week ago, went there spacifically to go to Frys, they had a 1T (as in Terrabite) offboard HD for $119. While there I also bought a few other goodies, but THAt was the main reason for going.

Also, on the CNX, record to your USB stick, carry that to the computer, save that file for later (it opens and plays on the computer, no decoding needed) then place it back in the CNX for the next time. Easy.

The company I bought it from said that it will support a 200 or up to 250 Gigabite external hard drive! I can't remember what one they said. I had mine for almost a year now but never tried it yet.

Do you have a Mini & have you tried an external hard drive on it yet?

Always wondering if that would work or not but the guys I got mine from says it will.

I bought my first DUO about three years ago, then a second one last year. I was told 250G max, but the first external HD I bought for one was a 500G, then I bought this 1T, and they all work just peachie keen. Go for it, you'll really wonder how you made it all this time without.

You'll be able to stop/pause live TV (not too sure about the mini, but I can set for at LEAST 3 hours), record on the fly, or record or reserve upcoming programs.

I believe I remember something (not sure if still true) but there is a max or 2 hours record on the mini, but that may have changed with newer bins.

First Landing Opportunity Waved Off

Sun, 24 May 2009 07:33:15 AM CDT

Mission Control Center waved off the first landing opportunity for shuttle Atlantis at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center because of poor weather conditions. Both Edwards and Kennedy will be considered for the next landing opportunities: 11:40 a.m. EDT at Edwards, 11:48 a.m. at Kennedy and 1:17 p.m. at Edwards.
