just a heads up to try to avoid a lot of NASA TV audio questions on September 1st or so...

NASA Television has a notice on their page that starting September 1st, the primary audio on each channel will be AC-3 instead of MPEG as the mux currently is configured.

Thanks for the heads up!:cool::up

actually the 2nd audio will still be MPEG

Note: Effective Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010 at 2 p.m. Eastern, NASA TV is changing the primary audio configuration for each of its four channels to AC-3, making each channel’s secondary audio MPEG 1 Layer II.

so folks without AC-3 will have to rescan tomorrow and then select audio 2

Usually the audio services propagate to a DVBS receiver automatically. The channels should not need to be rescanned, but the op will need to select the second audio channel to receive the MPEG 1 audio.

Good move by NASA! AC-3 has a much better sound.

If you receiver supports it, yes.

If you have a dirt-cheap current receiver or a lot of older receivers, you'll usually have no audio upon scanning/rescanning a channel and then post here wondering what is going on.

Easily way to avoid the PITA of selecting the secondary audio every time you tune NASA TV is just to manually define a nasa channel using the MPEG audio so you can just channel enter/channel up-down to it directly without adding the audio setting keystrokes to the mix.

This change is good for me, as the Visionsat will only record the audio stream that is selected on the receiver (it will not record the entire transport stream with both audio tracks). I use AC-3 because it is supported by the Blu-Ray standard, and I burn most of my recorded HD to Blu-Ray discs. I usually have AC-3 selected, but if I have to reset my receiver for whatever reason, sometimes it reverts to the MPEG audio, and I forget to check it. This way, the default audio will be AC-3... :up

OK something is weird

I scanned AMC3 today and on the NASA Mux (4000) there is one channel that says "BACKUP"

where did the other stations go?

I noticed that myself. Apparently, more than just audio changes are underway (edit: Probably NOT).

I found NASA at the old location (just the one channel "BACKUP....") as you did but also ran across NASA at 3 other places, but that was yesterday and I haven't checked yet today:

AMC 3

3866H 4340
3875H 8681
3884H 4340

EDit: Nevermind ,I see that these 3 have previously been used for feeds according to Lyngsat so nothing new there.

Just checked and all 5 channels are back on NASA (AMC3 4000H). I guess the audio has been changed now to:

HQ1 -> MPEG (276), AC3 (277)
HQ2 -> AC3 (292), MPEG (293)
HQ3 -> MPEG (4148), AC3 (4149)
HQ4 -> AC3 (4164), MPEG (4165)
HQ105 -> AC3 (83), MPEG (238)

I have a pansat 2700a I have the video but no audio the s/pdif port will not send a signal to my stereo, will my pansat be able to get the audio signal or do I have to buy a new fta box

How do I change the audio signal on my pansat 2700a so my s/dpif works. I hook the cord to the pansat but no audio I need some help here. also can I change the digital to analog signal so i can record it with my hdd dvd recorder

Check the menu on your pansat , to see if there may be an option to turn the spdif output on. some receivers have that as an option.

If I recall correctly, the SPDIF port on the 2700 is always on. It has been a very long time since I used that receiver for anything other than dish aiming, but I don't recall ever having to turn the SPDIF port on to get AC-3.

I don't know if it will help but you can change the audio source (pid) using the audio select button on the remote. It is the one with a speaker and a ? beside it. There is an MPEG audio choice for each channel there as well as the AC3 choice.

as mentioned in other posts you need a AC3 decoder for FTA satellite reception. Options buy a HD receiver, use surround sound receiver as decoder or get a AC3 decoder module for existing receiver. I have a SV8000hd for my fta and at second residence use a pansat 2700a with ac3 module connected to receiver.Love the free tunes. :D
