NeuLion Launches Sky Angel Programming

Christian Satellite TV Provider Plans Major Improvements with
Transition to IPTV

Plainview, NY– June 10, 2007 – NeuLion Inc., the company driving
convergence between television and the Internet, proudly announces
its partnership with Sky Angel U.S. LLC to launch Sky Angel, multiple
channels of Christian-centered and family-friendly programming, using
the NeuLion technology platform.

Sky Angel currently delivers over 30 television and radio channels to
customers across the contiguous United States using direct broadcast
satellite and reaches consumers in homes, churches, prisons,
shelters, hospitals and nursing homes. Programming includes family
movies; classic sitcoms; Christian shows for kids and teens; biblical
teaching and inspirational programs; home life, health and talk
shows; documentaries and educational programs; special events,
conferences and concerts; Christian music videos; and more.

Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) combines traditional television
with broadband Internet services. Enhanced programming, additional
channels and more choices of programming packages for individual
subscribers are specific features afforded by IPTV.

Sky Angel discovered NeuLion when it was reviewing the capabilities
of IPTV platforms. It chose NeuLion’s IPTV service for the quality of
the experience and broadest market reach, the ability to create an
experience better than cable or satellite for the consumer, and
NeuLion’s proven, pre-existing IPTV networks in production with
sizable consumer bases.

Sky Angel plans to transition its subscriber base in the United
States to IPTV over the next year. Consumers may request more
information about Sky Angel’s IPTV service at Sky Angel: Christian Family-Friendly Television (TV) and Radio.

“We believe the Sky Angel service, using the NeuLion platform, will
be more economical than our current satellite system and will provide
our viewers more options,” said Rob Johnson, chief executive officer
of Sky Angel. “We assessed a variety of different platforms and
recognized that NeuLion’s gave our subscribers the best advantages.”

IPTV provides viewers value-added services and conveniences such as
the ability to set up their own equipment, to retrieve programs that
have already aired, much like a personal video recorder, and to
utilize Video on Demand – all of which are the key benefits of an
IPTV service.

Sky Angel has been in business for more than 25 years and has a
strong subscriber base for its wholesome family-friendly and faith-
based programming. The adoption of NeuLion’s technology will improve
the television experience and build on that subscriber relationship
into the future. NeuLion’s multi-platform service allows Sky Angel to
reach viewers anywhere at anytime – whether through the television,
web or mobile device.

“We are really excited to have Sky Angel join the NeuLion family. We
believe this partnership will enhance and ease the viewing for its
subscribers and allow them to grow more rapidly and reach even more
viewers,” said Chris Wagner, NeuLion’s executive vice president and
co-founder.

“We know that our current and future subscribers will truly enjoy the
interactive programming and other benefits resulting from the
convergence of Internet and television,” said Johnson. “IPTV will
provide them with the ability to personalize and maximize their
viewing experience.”

I am impressed at the technology being offered here. Most IPTV services seem to be using Windows Media and that's that.

NeuLion uses only the open standard H.264/MPEG-4 (AVC). This should make it much, much easier for those who want to view the streams on their desktop/laptop computers to do so. Particularly those on Mac OS X and/or Linux, the userbase most other services leave behind.

It's also notable that this is the video format compatible with the iPod, and the first link below shows an iPod receiving programming. I'm not suggesting live streaming in this case, but it seems like there might be a possibility to generate video podcasts, in effect, by recording the live streams as files. I think that would really be a nice benefit to subscribers, to put any program they like on their iPod to view at their convenience.

Impressed by the technology. VERY dissapointed by the fact that yet again info is in the PRESS rather than being sent to its "strong subscriber base". I wonder if neulion knows how many of us are jumping ship?

H.264/MPEG-4 means DRM-laden video :( We currently use MPEG-2, but are switching to MPEG-4 for the compression and enhanced DRM that content providers demand when delivering HDTV/PPV/VOD content. It looks like they are going with the NeuLion service to facilitate the same type of relationship as they had with Dish - a 3rd party handles the distribution and SA grabs a piece of the cash, not a bad deal for SA.

Transition to IPTV
Maybe it should read . . . Christian Satellite TV Provider throws in the towel to the dismay of lifetime subscribers and plans a transition to IPTV, and will tell those subscribers about it sometime in the future.

So maybe we could see a lot of Dish Network receivers be available for cheap soon on ebay when SkyAngel is shut off for those that do not subscribe to Dish Network as well.

Yep, but many will be very old, lilke my receiver which is from the mid 1990s I think.

Are DISH receivers any use for anything besides DISH? Will older receivers pick up DISH family? I assume the 18" dish can be tossed out?

I think older receivers will pick up the new stuff. I'm signing up for a package that will come with a dual receiver and DVR service for about what we were paying for SA and NetFlix combined.

I think not. The hardware will work with Canada's Bell ExpressVu, and maybe even work as a FTA receiver. But either of those options require different firmware. With Dish firmware, it they work only on Dish and Sky Angel.

Will older receivers pick up DISH family?
Yup.

I assume the 18" dish can be tossed out?
In general standard definition US programming is available on two satellites (110 and 119) viewable with a single Dish 500. However, if you're interested in international programming or public service channels (including 3ABN), you might like to keep your 18" dish pointed where it is and just add a Dish 500.
