Been a rough year, lots of changes in my household. My wife passed away in April, so now it's just me and my 13 yr old daughter. I quit my job as a wind turbine Tech (50 mile drive 1 way), and started a new business. Needless to say, most of my grandiose FTA plans have stalled, at least for the short term.

When life hands you lemons......I decided to open a small service shop fixing consumer electronics and satellite TV servicing. An opportunity to spread the word about FTA, maybe even make a dollar or two along the way. So up on the roof of the former bakery went two recycled Superdishes, hooked to a coolsat 4K. This Saturday, I was talking to the school's bus barn mgr, and scored a nice 1.8M CM offset with nonpen mount. As soon as I can get my friend from the lumberyard to bring his forklift, up on the shop it goes. My thanks go out to Linuxman's most excellent work on getting the whole arc for inspiration in taking the plunge.

I'll second that, good luck in the future, and success to you in your new business. That definitely is a nice dish.

Terribly sorry to hear of your loss. All the best to you and your daughter, sounds like you've got your head and your heart in the right place.
I was a consumer electronics tech. for over 15 years, if you ever need anything let me know. Sometimes in troubleshooting I found it useful to have someone as a sounding board to bounce ideas off of.

Good luck in your new venture!!

Edit: And that is one fine satellite dish :) !

Cad, Best of luck in your business adventure! Many of us have been dealt similar circumstances to yours in life. It will turn around...hang in there. Blind:)

Good luck with your new business. I wonder, what was the need to manufactures such a big offset dish for US market?

Sorry for your loss. My Mom always said “When one door closes, a new one opens.” I wish you and your daughter good health, happiness and good luck in the new business venture.

Nice dish. :up

Cadsulfide,

I am very sorry to hear that your wife has passed away. I wish only the best for you and your daughter. I am sure that it is going to be difficult for her without Mom. You will have to fill in the voids for her and it might get tough, being at the age that she is. But, don't forget that you have friends here that will help you and support you. If we cannot do something directly, we can offer some moral support and a sounding board, or simply just let you know that you are among friends who care.

Your small business enterprise sounds really awesome and I hope that it takes off really well for you! A great adventure and hobby! Please keep us up-to-date on your progress. Maybe some of us will take a vacation and come to visit your shop. That would be excellent!

Keep your head high and smile, even when you don't feel like it. It does make a difference.

Thanks for all the kind words and encouragement.

We left the city (Toledo) six years ago for as far out in the country as you can go and still be in the lower 48. After the initial culture shock of not having to lock anything and people actually being polite to each other, we fell in love with the place. Bought a farmstead, moved a 100 yr old house onto it, fixed up the barn, and got chickens, pigs, goats, dog, and cats. A high maintenance lifestyle to be sure, but paradise for a couple of city folks tired of the rat race. My garden here occupies more space than four houses do back in Toledo. The nearest McDonalds is 90 miles away, come hell or high water I'm stayin'!

Not much use out here for an industrial controls and instrumentation guy, but everyone has satellite TV, a 4WD pickup, and a computer. Not interested in fixing someone else's truck, but the others have possibilities. Lot's of BUD's out there still standing, possible retrofit opportunities.

Got the 6 footer on the roof today and pointed at 101W, will start collecting materials for more lnb's...looks pretty good on a 52" Hitachi I got DOA and repaired.

The shop is about 100' north of the county traffic light and three blocks from the school, my daughter Tesla will be learning how to transfer 8 track tapes, 45's 78's and LP's over to CD after school....if her homework is done.

And yes Linuxman, I am a STNG fan, glad you caught the reference.:D

QUOTE: "My daughter (Tesla) will be learning how to transfer 8 track tapes, 45's 78's and LP's over to CD after school....if her homework is done."

Now that is a very unique name... Tesla! I like it very much, I think that it is very original and it strikes me very well for a girls name (or it could be for a boy as well). But, it seems to suit a girl moreso. It has class and I understand as I know who Nicola Tesla was. Here is something from Wikipedia for all those who do not know him.....

[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikola_Tesla"]Nikola Tesla - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/File:N.Tesla.JPG" class="image" title="circa 1896."><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d4/N.Tesla.JPG/225px-N.Tesla.JPG"@@AMEPARAM@@commons/thumb/d/d4/N.Tesla.JPG/225px-N.Tesla.JPG[/ame]

I never would have thought about the name "Tesla" for a girl, but I have to admit that it rings very nicely! I wish I had thought of it for my own daughter. I don't know if she would have liked it, but I sure think it sounds nice! :)

Cad,
I am sorry to hear of your family's loss. Best wishes from my family to yours. Tragedy and loss often brings family members closer, hopefully that is the case for yours as well.
I have lived in a rural, un-incorporated area for nearly 40 years, wouldn't ever go back to "the city". I've made it plain if I lost it all, I'd live under a county road bridge before I'd move back in town. Country life is the best.
Best of luck on your new venture. Hopefully there is enough customer base to make a living at it. I too am in the process controls, instrumentation/analyzer field, I couldnt imagine getting very far from the petro-chem complexes and trying to make a living in the tech consumer services side....well maybe after I crack open that 401 in a few years......maybe....lol
As Inno offered, if you find something that stumps you, post it and we can round table it. I have a dear friend that passed a few years ago, ham operator, and retired FM station engineer. One of my most memorable things he used to say, usually when we were elbow deep in some hairbrained project and halfway thru a bottle of tequila was "Two heads are better than one, unless they're both stupid".
Speaking of resurected Hitachis, I've got a 55" RPTV that has an optical engine that is just about shot. It's out of wanrranty and of course H "disavows all knowledge". From what I've read it was a problem child for them. I've found new OEM for about $1000 and refirbs for ~600 bucks. Got any leads on any for less than that? I've had this one out a couple of times. Piece o' cake to replace.....
