I got directv like 4 months ago and at the time did not get the free hd upgrade but got the DVR free upgrade... at the time i didnt have a HD tv and wasnt going to get one soon... now i got a 32in in the bedroom and a new 46in LED LCD in the living... of course... wanting to upgrade to HD now... own my own business and came across a dish with the WNC FW2 and FW9 on it... the little bracket that connect the 2 is broke and i was just gonna JB weld it but everything else looks fine... from what ive read so far i think this is a HD Sat but its just a older model... some say not as good as the slim one and some say better... my question is how hard is this to hook up myself? i know how to setup everything with the screen cause we do it for football games at the camp and stuff but i wasnt sure if this WILL work for what i want it too... none of the coax cable hookups are marked so i guess it doesnt matter which one i connect too huh? Ive just never hooked up a satellite with more then one little pointer thingy... LNB... i think its a 2 LNB correct? cause it has 2 coax outputs... like i said im new to all this so trying to figure it out... lol... i really dont understand the whole picking up different satellites either and how to check that on the screen... cause likei said havent had a chance to mess with one that could yet... i think... anyways thanks ALOT for the help in advance!!!

yeah... 5,584 posts and thats the best you can say huh? This one is FREE... the whole point of why i asked everything i did... if i wanted a new one i would call directv and have them install everything for $200... im new to THIS forum... not forumS... thanks... but no thanks...

Rigging that old dish is just going to wind up costing you time, frustration and money in the long run. It really won't work - HD is a lot more sensitive than your SD and it doesn't have the right LNB on it anyway.

I see new Slimlines advertised all the time for about $80 on Craig's list. Used seem to be about $30 and up.

Save yourself some heartache and stomach acid & just get the right dish.

yeah... may just go ahead and give directv there money i guess...

They want $200 to do it for you - you can do it yourself for like $80 and probably 2 hours tops of work (that long since you have not done it before). You could "pay" yourself like $60/hour if you think you can DIY.

It's not like splitting the atom - plenty of resources on this site to guide you through the install.

Just a thought.

well the $200 covers the HD DVR reciever and the dish and all install... i found a HR20 on craigslist for $100 so would cost me like $180ish if i found a slimline somewhere... maybe alittle cheaper if i could fine a used one but still... but i wanna get it all going before the 24th cause everyones coming over to watch the UFC fight that night... so i gotta get on the ball if im going to break it down and save $50 or so... if not then i got time to get them out here...

IF the used dish you buy was used in a different location you will have to change its' settings. IF the receiver you buy has a "history" like unpaid PPV or past due monthly charges Directv will not activate it. In any case you will need to send them $20.00 for a new access card.

The LNB with the 2 thingies is an old SD dish and will never "see" the HD sats.

its actually got 3 thingies... lol... i dunno... maybe i wrote that wrong up there... what does directv need to know if it is "locked" the serial number and model number? i searched for a slimline on craigslist and all i could find was "wanted" lol...guess im just going to go with there stuff and pay out...

The big thingies on the outside or the little thingies on the inside...when you remove the short thing with threads?

Directv is particular about who watches their commercials and other events. They control everything with serial numbers and access cards. Unless you have been working with thingies and what-evers for awhile it will be easier to just let them do it. This is rocket science after all!
