Hi,

I had just recently installed a FTA Satellite Motorized system, but I can not get any channel after many struggles : (

1. The receiver shows between 70% to 81% in Level and 4% to 6% in Quality during the Installation Scanning for almost all satellites. Why so low in Quality reading and what is the different between Level and Quality reading?
2. Also, the receiver shows 1st satellite is 15 degree W TelStar 12 to the last satellite at around 150 degree W, and no satellite on the East at all. Are all satellites on the West?
3. But the motor is supposed to be able to go 75 deg E and 75 deg W. Which satellite is on or near 0 degree/positon of the motor (aimed True South) that I should scan?
4. I had set the mounting pole plumb, Latitude = 37 (elevation angle 53), True South to be 165 degree from magnetic South. Declination angle around 24 or 26.
I had further pointed the dish up, down and side ways, but the level and quality reading did not change much at all. What is wrong?
5. What should be the setting on the receiver for Motorized Setting on (assuming 15W TelStar12):
Frequency (1 to 25),
LNB Power (off, on, 13v, 18v),
LNB Type (Universal, OCS, single),
LNB Freq. (9.750/10.6, 9.750/10.75, 0.000/0.000),
DiSEqC Motor (1.2, USAL, off)?
6. How to reset or reinitialize all Coolsat setting to re-install?
7. Is that true that Auto Scan will take care the setting parameters details for all satellites and that I do not need to input any parameters such as TP#, freq …?

My equipment list is: Winegard DS-2076 31”, Invacom quad L/C LNB, 4-Way DiSEqC switch, Digipower SG-2100 DiSEqC 1.2 motor, and Coolsat 5000 receiver.
My Zipcode is 95035.

WELCOME to the forum!



1. Forget signal level you are looking ONLY for signal quality. You will ONLY get it when you are using the parameters of a known LIVE TP. (Transponder) and your dish is pointed at the satellite.

2. All satellites are to the south but we are in the western hemisphere so you will only see West Satellites (Do not use Telstar 12 at all)

3. The motor does go East and West of your '0' position that is TRUE SOUTH (Same as your Longitude)

4. See below angles.

5. The QPH-031 is a Standard LNBF on the linear ports Use 10750 for the L.O.

LNB Power ON.

6. There should be a way to do a factory default setting on the receiver, see the manual.

7. Auto scan will scan (And find) the satellite for LIVE transponders only after you have to set up the receiver/LNB


I would remove the motor and switch for now and and try to find and store your true south satellite before tackling the motor install!

Use the below angles, the elevations are WITHOUT the motor. See below for motor settings

I would use G10R to point your dish........

When you do get round to adding the motor use the below angles...... (One side of the motor may be marked ELEV. and the other LAT.)



Motor Elevation = 53º

Dish (when on motor) = 24º

The Coolsat 5000 will blind-scan so you shouldn't need to do an auto-scan.

Everything else PSB has said is solid advice.

A strong transponder to try on G10R is 11805, horizontal polarity. It's an educational channel put out by the University of Washington. I have it on right now and I'm getting 94% quality on my Coolsat 5000 (overcast skies). On a clear day it peaks at 97%.

I should add my dish is a 90cm Fortec with a standard LNB.

Your advice meant and enlightened so much to me, as you might know I am guessing and learning ….

Please don’t mind me asking some basic questions:

1. Is true south, in my case, equal to magnetic south -15 deg = 165 deg (assuming 180 is the magnetic south on my compass)?
2. is 0 degree means true south?
3. for 123 deg west for G10R, where is the 0 degree reference start?
4. is Freq = TP#?
5. Should my LNB set to power on, type = universal, freq = 9.750/10.75?
6. does blind search mean we don’t need to input a lot parameters?
7. Is Sat Lng means Satellite longitude and where is 0 deg starting?
8. what is Az (t), Az (m), El, Skew mean? Is El = elevation angle, Skew = LNB polarity?

It will be great if I can even just to get one channel working at this point : )

Az refers to azimuth. Referring to the chart above you'll find G10R is at 166.5 degrees at your location. Use your compass for a magnetic heading. South on your compass is 180 degrees. So looking from the back of the dish you will aim it slightly to the left. The elevation is basically how high your dish is aimed. There are markings on the mount to show this. The easiest way to aim would be to set the elevation, tune your receiver to an active G10R transponder, then slowly move the dish back and forth until you get some quality. The 123 degrees of G10R refers to its orbital slot, not where you aim your dish. Check some previous posts on this forum and you'll find references about skew. If you're trying to get a satellite without using a motor you'll need to adjust the skew (rotating the lnb) manually for best signal. It is different from transponder polarity.
 
1. Yes that's where you can expect to find True south on your compass (See FAQ area)

2. Yes 0 deg is your true south on the motor.

3. Orbital positions are calculated from '0' Longitude

6. Yes BLIND scan finds the transponders / channels after the receiver is set up and you are pointed at a satellite(If you think you are close to a satellite try a blind scan)

8. AZ (t) true Az(m) Magnetic El=elevation Skew = the rotation of the LNBF in its holder. (LNBF should be straight up and down when using a motor or pointing true south with a fixed dish)

Hi PSB and TECHPUPPY,

Thanks for the info.. Appreciated.

1. Last night, I had reset the receiver data, re-entered the parameters, pinpointed G10R TP6 only, moved motor to point at center 0 deg, moved (step increment) to W and to E, the quality still shown between 4 to 7%.
2. I believe my mounting pole is plumb, elevation is 53 deg (lat. 37) per motor bracket scale.
3. The dish declination angle may not be accurate due to the Winegard dish bracket provide in the package was for fix dish (has the elevation scale) instead of motorized dish that has the declination scale. Using that dish bracket will not have clearance to decline the dish.
4. The solution I was told was to invert the dish bracket to allow declination. And I will have to play around/approximate the declination angle, assuming a drop of 6 deg declination which equal 24 deg on a correct declination dish bracket.
5. I am planning to point the dish to 166.5 deg (Az m), set the receiver parameter to pinpoint G10R TP6, assuming my elevation angle is pointed accurately, mounting pole is plumb (quite sure), LNB is working, and remove the DiSEqC switch, use the Linear instead of Circular from the LNB for simplicity, then I will just adjust the declination angle in hope to get the Quality level up. Would that be a good approach? Please advise.

Good idea to remove the motor and try to find the satellite without it, work your way backwards.

Use the RED mark on the Winegard dish to set the ABOVE elevation and it will easily get to 24º when used with the motor.

When you do add the motor the dish elevation can be changed to catch signal quality but never change the elevation on the motor.

Hi Simo,
For G10R you need to use Linear and NOT circular. Circular is for satellites like 110° and 119°. IMO, try without motor and DiSEQC switch. You will get a hang of dish positions, angle and how much patience you need to get G10R set up for the first time. Good Luck :)
