CABLEVISION Introduces High-Definition and Digital Video Recording Services in Mexico – One of the First Operators to Implement this System in the Region

CableAdvance HD/DVR uses the Motorola DCT6412 set-top to allow users to record two channels simultaneously, with 120GB of storage available for both SD and HD programming

MEXICO CITY – 8 March 2005 – In an unprecedented effort, and within just two years of new management taking over, CABLEVISION today announced the launch of a new product and service that will allow Cablevision’s Premium Digital package users to receive high-definition (HD) channels and digital video recording (DVR) capabilities through Motorola’s (NYSE:MOT) DCT6412 dual-tuner HD-DVR set-top. This new service will enable users to record up two channels simultaneously or record one channel while watching another previously recorded show. The Motorola DCT6412 includes 120 gigabytes of storage, for hours of standard definition and high definition TV content recording.

“This effort is the outcome of a joint undertaking by three technology leaders – Motorola, Microsoft, and Cablevision – and will allow subscribers to take control of their television viewing. Consumers will be able to record, rewind and pause their favorite shows in high-definition,” said John Paul Broc, General Director of CABLEVISION. “CABLEVISION is the first cable TV operator to launch this product in Latin America; placing Mexico at the forefront of digital services for cable TV.”

Subscribers to the new Cablevision service will be able to enjoy the New Interactive Guide 2.0, a component of the Microsoft software platform, which will allow users to preview up to 13 days of programming, within the guide, for all the digital channels they subscribe to. It will also allow users to look up shows by date and time, by name, by actor, subject, and by genre. Cablevision also plans to offer Video On Demand, HD, and interactive games, among other features, in the future.

CableAdvance DVR/HD, which uses Motorola’s state-of-the art DCT6412 dual tuner HD-DVR set-top, will be introduced to the market exclusively by CABLEVISION for a select group of subscribers in retail, and it will expand to all interested subscribers by request. CableAdvance is already on display in Cablevision’s main branches and sale points. In these locations, CABLEVISION is promoting the advantages offered by this service.

So when can we see one for VOOM?!

Momentum is there... 120G is a we bit small for HD; 12.5 hours BUT better than nothing.

12 hours. Bwahahahaha, my TiVo is modified to 207 hours!!!!!

But...it's....SD....

Cablevision Mexico. A 100% Mexican owned cable company founded around 1960.

Great news if you live in Mexico City. Doesn't get you much if you live in metro New York.

BTW, the 6412 is what we've been using on Comcast since December. It has some issues, but for $5/mo you can't expect the moon.

LOL!

Just noticed they no longer make claims about number of hours of storage with the 120 Gig. In fact they have a disclaimer in the middle of that PR that says,

"*Recording capacity: Motorola and CABLEVISION are not responsible for the recording capacity of the 120GB hard drive, since this varies, depending on the quality of the programming and the quality of the transmission within the channels."

One of the annoying features I ran across with this box is that it doesn't record anywhere near the amount of hours they first claimed. I'll bet you couldn't get more than 4-5 hrs of HD on this thing. As it turns out, most of my recordings are SD anyway.

Look at the good side, at least we aren't the ones testing it. When we get it most of the bugs will have probably have been worked out :D

BTW I really don't have any use for a DVR, but since many want it I say hurry up and get it out :)

That model of Motorola is a cable only box, so the testing is of no benefit to any potential Voom DVR.

wow, now us voomers are not only behind E* and D* in the US as far as a DVR goes but we are behind the Mexicans cable subs too :(

Please change the damned title of this thread, I am pissed at this.

Im not sure what pisses me off more. The title or the fact that Cablevision gets a DVR to its foreign subs before its Voom subs?

You are right, but Vurbano is kinda right, except for the country and different owners which he did get wrong, the cablevision here in the US has had HD-DVRs for quite a while.

There are a multitude of other Cablevisions not directly related to the New York one. Typically their names are (city name) Cablevision, Cablevision of (city name), or split the words like Cable Vision. It can be confusing at times :)
