I am an ex-voomer, I only lasted 3 weeks. Voom is a great service, they hands down have the most HD. However, the picture quality is so poor (it was for me) that I didn't keep it even though I had 2 free months of VaVaVoom ...

When they get there which will come with their migration to WM9 from MPEG2, they will start gaining more ground. The other kicker for me was no DVR ... The wife missed her TiVo quite a bit.

I only lasted 2 weeks with Voom. I couldn't stand their buggy box, rain fade, and PQ.

I wish I could get the NBC-HD channel.

You can, the NBC HD channel will be available to everyoe but just for the olympics. (If the NBC HD channel were to stay around in the future (and tere is nothing mentioned about that) then it owuld be only available to the O&O areas.)

Oh cool! Will we need to call to request or will they automatically make it available to every one of us HDrs?

Actually, Scott, the release (from both DirecTV and NBC Cable) says DirecTV will have carriage rights to NBC O&O digital signals.
It seems clear that DirecTV will be offering NBC HD to those in HD coverage areas and to those in "white" areas soon after the Olympics.
I know they are attempting to get ABC HD (In "white" and O&O areas) in time for Monday Night Football.
And there also is some legislation in Congress (the McCain-Ensign bill) which would allow D* and E* (and VOOM, for that matter) to provide network HD signals to anyone whose local station provides too low a signal or no signal at all.

Someone on another forum listed these as the NBC owned-and-operated stations

I have to disagree. The press release indicates the "digital retransmission consent of the NBC O&O stations" and the NBC-HD Olympics coverage as two separate items. I think it just means that D* has renewed the agreement for all the NBC O&O SD channels and not the NBC O&O HDTV signals.
July 28, 2004--NBC Universal Cable (NBCU) and DIRECTV, Inc., today announced a long-term multi-platform carriage agreement for the NBC Universal Cable properties, including USA and SCI FI, digital retransmission consent for the NBC O&O stations, rights to distribute NBC's HD Olympic programming for the upcoming Athens games, Bravo HD+, as well as rights to carry first-run Universal movie titles and NBC Universal specials and events on a pay-per-view basis.
I guess its what ever they mean by "digital". Does it mean the Digital in DBS or the Digital in Digital Television Broadcasting.

The Press release seems to indicate several items covered in the deal.
  1. USA Network
  2. SCI FI
  3. Digital restransmission agreement for NBC O&O stations
  4. Rights to distribute NBC's HDTV Olympic programming for Athens games
  5. Bravo HD+
  6. First Run Univeral Movies Titles ie) ppv
  7. NBC Universal specials and events on PPV.
