LAS VEGAS--Optical Solutions is integrating voice over IP into its access platform, the company announced Tuesday.

The optical access equipment vendor has integrated an off-the-shelf SIP protocol stack to its customer-located optical network terminal (ONT).

Because the system VoIP-enables the ONT on the side of the house, it doesn’t require customers to install additional devices inside the home to get VoIP.

“This isn’t the Vonage model,” said Optical Solutions chief executive officer Mike Dagenais. “You don’t need additional boxes. You use the existing phone jacks, the existing phone.”

This new version of the product, which is now in trials, will be generally available in November. The company is working to ensure interoperability with leading softswitches.
