What directv receivers will allow you to access the local ota channels without subscribing to directv and are there some receivers that will do so without even having a dish hooked up to it at all, just a ota antenna

1. I'm not sure you can use a DirecTV receiver without it being activated with DirecTV service....

and

2. Why would you want to? You can get a much cheaper (approx. $150 or so) OTA HD tuner if you just want the programming or a TiVo if you want a DVR, and from what I've heard, the TiVo's are better than anything any of the service providers are offering.

You're better off with a stand alone OTA box because most of them will receive guide info while AFAIK none of the satellite receivers will. If you are not looking for HD a lot of DVD burners come with digital tuners now.

I've read older directv boxes will work for ota only but the new ones won't. I do know the current Dish boxes will not do OTA without a sub.

thanks everyone i currently have a samsung ts-360 that gets ota without even a dish but am looking for another for my daughter. i was wondering about the philips r15 300
