I'm currently looking to get a couple of outdoor wireless webcams with pan and tilt, I'd also like the option of either autofocus or software controlled focus. Problem I have is in finding any real information aside from manufacturers details on products that are 5 years old such as the Dlink 5300g.

Anyone have some good recommendations on camera's and review sites for them? Googling "outdoor webcams" tends to bring up more sites dedicated to looking at webcams than the actual product.

Change your searching from webcams to "IP cameras", and you'll find plenty.

Van- I shopped around a few years ago when I wanted to do the same thing. Panasonic security cameras offered a good deal for me, using a simple cable modem ISP without a static IP.

Couple of issues with your request- Consider the low cost outdoor security camera ( these would be $400 or less) With these you get pan and tilt with limited range. The camera is wide angle and zoom function is software. Of more important feature is the ability to record and upload your images. Focus is only important feature when you are considering a high end camera with zoom in capability. Here focus is a must. These also have much wider range of pan and tilt.

For my security concerns, I have an outdoor camera that uploads a 640x480 jpg to my server automatically everytime there is motion. Thye camera has a motion detector and if something moves in the camera range (adjustable) it snaps a still and uploaded it to my web server. I also have it record a still shot every 15 seconds on a 4 Gb SD card and then automatically deletes when the card is full. There is an auto pan feature but I don't need it. Obviously, when using the auto pan the motion detector is disabled. Panasonic offers the free upload service as part of the camera purchase. Of course, the live camera functions include sound and video and a pan tilt software controller joystick. One upgrade to the $300 model is a talk back which I have used. Simply talk to the person in camera range and they can respond back. I had occasion to speak to an intruder once through this when I was away and he turned around and left!

OK so what about those super zoom in spy cameras? Plan to spend about $1500 starting and the down side is you don't get all the features as those cameras have the features at extra charge. You just get the camera and pan/tilt/zoom and focus. But if you need to zoom in on a license plate 5 blocks away, these babies can do that.

If you go to the Panasonic security camera website, you can check out their various cameras and actually play with some demos.

This
is very similar to the ones I use and described features above. They have a bunch more than the ones listed here. Mine has the SD card recorder plus the audio talk back sound capability but otherwise is the same.

The setup on your router is a bit tricky too. So if you ren't used to specifying ports and stuff, best to get a network person to help you, especially when you need to setup the software for several cameras and talk back features and image storage management. This stuff can get complicated in a hurry.

I definitely want clarity with what ever camera's I get, a standard web cam only has clarity up to about 25 feet and then it blurs out.

I'll need 2 camera's for the back yard because it drops out into a canal. I'll need another for the front hall entry because its 12ft long and narrow as it leads up to the front door. I'll need a pan and tilt for the fascia over the garage that can cover the driveway and front yard and that should do it.
