Doing a scan tonight and noticed the main PBS mux (12180 V 30000) is now duplicated on 12060 V 30000

same channels
HD feed
SD feed
Create
V-Me
PBS World

makes ya go hmmmmmmmmm...maybe some moving around of channels?

Yes, very interesting. That was the first thought I had when I read the first of your post.

yup...did some researching and looks like they're moving stuff around

JUNE 1
Duplicate MPEG2 TX24 to
MPEG2 TX18 (HD03, SD01-SD04)

June 1 - 9 Stations Migrate to TX18 for
HD03, SD01©SD04 Services

June 18
Discontinue use of TX24 for MPEG2 Services

June 18 - 26
Test MPEG4 on TX 24 (HD01-3, SD01-4)

June 25 - 30 Station Migration to MPEG4 Carrier on TX24

July Dates:
1 - 31 Station Migration to MPEG4 Carrier on TX24
1 - 31 Transition TX23 (SCPC HD04) to MPEG 4
1 - 31 Establish TX23 (SCPC HD05)
1 - 31 Transition TX23 (SCPC SD05, SD06) to MPEG
31 Drop Temporary TX18 services
31 Drop Legacy TX22 HD01, HD02 services

so in a nutshell

the stuff on 12180 is moving to 12060 as MPEG2
They will launch stuff on 12180 as MPEG4
looks like the stuff between 12160-12180 horizontal (those 3 feeds that are symbol rate 4444) switching to MPEG4
Transponder 22 is the HD feed right now (12140) in MPEG2 and leaving 7/31. It will be MPEG4

by the way...in the above
TP18 is 12060 vertical
TP22 is 12140 vertical
TP23 is the stuff between 12160-12180 Horizontal
TP24 is 12180 vertical

oh snap didnt read it good enough

July dates
31 Drop Temporary TX18 services
31 Drop Legacy TX22 HD01, HD02 services

That means ALL MPEG2 stations will be gone July 31st. So you'll need a receiver that does MPEG4 after 7/31 for PBS

This will for sure effect some fellow fta'ers.

Is montana pbs moving? Would love to see it on 12180 with quality at 72%

They'll kill those c-band feeds too then, most likely. I can get the stuff on OTA pretty well, at least.

I wonder if they'll keep the same bitrates as they are using now with MPEG2. If they do, this should mean an increase in picture quality (not that PBS ever really looked bad to begin with, but 17 megabits of MPEG4 will look better than 17 megabits of MPEG2 :) ...

From what I can tell, they will be cutting the bitrate at the same time they go MPEG-4. It sounds like they'll be getting rid of 12140 entirely and putting those two feeds onto 12180 in addition to the feeds that are already there. In addition, it sounds like they're converting SD07 into a new HD05 feed.

What I'm wondering is if they'll be leaving it in DVB-S, which would be good for receivability but not give them as high a bitrate to play with, or if they'll be going DVB-S2 at the same time, which would make the feeds harder to receive but would let them keep the bitrates higher.

I'm also curious what will happen to the 12140 transponder. I have no information nor basis for this statement, so do not take it as anything remotely resembling fact, but wouldn't it be wonderful to see Montana PBS in HD?

IT is! er I do! That is MTPBS is my local OTA HD PBS :)

This is certainly not good news for FTA satellite.

why? All it requires is folks to get a MPEG4 receiver and they're pretty inexpensive now. Its not like they are changing to MPEG4 and the receivers are still $250 or more ;)
