TAMPA - The region's dominant cable TV company, Bright House Networks, is gaining speed signing up customers for something else - basic telephone service.

More than 225,000 customers in the Tampa Bay and Orlando areas have signed up for the telephone service, which runs over cable TV lines, since the company launched it in June 2004. About 8,000 customers a month are signing up in the Bay area, where the company counts 128,000 telephone customers.

Basic telephone service is a key part of all-in-one packages that also include Internet and pay television service. Communications companies see such packages as the best way to increase sales and profits.

Bright House, the Bay area's dominant cable TV company, is fighting for telephone customers with the dominant phone company, Verizon Communications.

Verizon is spending several hundred million dollars to build a fiber-optic data network in the Bay area, allowing it to provide telephone, Internet and cable TV service.

Verizon has achieved market penetration of 9 percent to 12 percent in the Florida, Texas and Virginia markets where it has been selling combined service for more than six months. That's halfway to the company's five-year goal. About 80 percent of Verizon's TV customers have signed up for all three services.
