After the races at Laguna Seca had finished, I switch over to MoMax to watch Serenity, and I notice the Showtime channels (which I'm not subscribed to) are on the guide, along with a new channel...Pirate TV, with a message about contacting Dish to become a legitimate customer.

I am a 'legitimate customer,' but just thought it was kinda funny. Must be my 921 acting funny, which surprisingly, it rarely does.

Now if you only make it show you a porn channel on accident eh?

my box use to do the same thing (do wacky things and get weird channels). I had a retailers channel for like 2 days on my 301 once :)

Echostar Knowledge Base show Pirate TV on free preview to select subscribers on channel 123. I don't see it, guess I'm not select.

the "select" people are people who are stealing Dish Network.

Okay, it must just be my receiver acting wonky. I have AT120, and Cartoon Network disappeared from my guide while I'm watching it, and that Pirate TV channel appears and disappears, and comes up on random channel numbers when it comes back. Right now, it's channel 308, and the Showtime channels still show as subscribed, but gives the "Smart card not authorised for this channel" message when I select it. Odd.

Captain Midnight - GREAT show!
I'm sure that lots here do not know whom Captain Midnight was! If he hadn't bragged, he wouldn't have gotten caught.

I don't think that would work with digital.

Software Download

I think your receiver is due for a software updayte. Hold the power button for about 5 seconds, and wait for few minutes, and see if it does not download. I have never heard of that problem, but I know programming has popped into a de-activated receiver before, and a software update fixed it.

I thought they tracked him down because of the limited (at least at the time) number of uplink locations that had enough power to over-power the HBO uplink on Galaxy 1?

The funny thing is he was fined what turned out to be 386 months of HBO at the $12.95 rate! :D

Anyone remember the movie Captain Midnight? - it was about a teenager who made a pirate radio station. And that is who the satellite version of Captain Midnight got his name from. The 1970's movie was THE movie for wanna be pirate radio ops :)

I'm talking about the guy who took over HBO for a few minutes back in the 80"s.

http://www.tvacres.com/nick_c.htm, interesting how he did that, uplink required a lot of power, big dish and precise positioning, not counting encoders and a lot of other equipment.
You don't know the story? He worked at a PPV uplink center. He repointed for HBO after they had stopped broadcasting for the night.

As far as his "first" broadcast with the color pattern, he says he didn't do it.
