Blackout rules were initiated to protect home field attendance but over the years MLB has been allowed, by the myopic FCC, to twist the intent around so it's main purpose today is to protect TV agreements. It has very little, if anything, to do with home field attendance. For instance, I live in the Phillies market. Let's say the Phillies are in LA to play the dodgers. Shouldn't be a problem, right? Well, ESPN is carrying that game you would think I could watch it but no, it's blacked out for me and the only reason is to "protect" the Comcast telecast of the same game but I can't get Comcast so boo hoo for me. There was a time when the FCC had some integrity but sadly, today, I don't think they can even spell the word.
