I just purchased a home and I am planning on going with DirectTV. Currently there is just a half-assed coax setup, it's actually going straight through the ceiling right now without any wall plates. The current coax is going to be ripped out. So I am starting fresh.

I have never had DTV or any satellite before so I don't know what is involved in the free installation, but am I safe to assume they won't wire up the rooms through the walls for me? Maybe just punch holes through outer walls which I don't want.

I'm guessing that if I want to get the place wired correctly then I will need to do it myself before the installation. From what I've read I will need individual RG-6 coax lines from the splitter off of the dish to the TV locations. I'm assuming the dish will be pointing to the south. I have an idea of where the dish can be installed. Will I have much of a choice over the dish location or is it up to the installer to determine what works? I guess it's fairly important since I need to know where my coax lines start.

I also plan on getting MRV. Each box would need to have an ethernet connection to the network, right? I plan on wiring the house with Cat6 so with MRV that would also need to include network connections at the TV locations.

Please correct me if any of my assumptions are wrong. I would like to get this right the first time. Thanks for any help/tips/advice.

Wall fishes are extra, standard installs are through the exterior walls into the house. If I were you I would do it yourself.

Since you are going to have MRV, you will need a SWiM dish, which luckily for you means a single line to each receiver, even DVR's.

You won't need ethernet cable, because MRV works over the existing coax. For internet functionality with the receivers you will need a broadband DECA adapter which is also connected via RG6 to the SWiM splitter then a short cable to your router.

Go to dishpointer.com. Enter your address. You will get an idea of where the dish will need to be pointed and where it can be mounted. Keep in mind, they will try to mount it close to a ground location, preferably near an outside electrical panel or sub panel for an A/C unit or heat pump.

I have always pre-wired my own home for the same reasons you do. Make sure you use solid copper core RG6.
