We have a HP notebook computer. The computer sees the wireless network which we set up & says it's connected. But every time we try to connect to it,the IE 7 browser says it cannot display the webpage. The people at linksys have been unable to help us with their router. They suggest it could be the wireless transmitter in the notebook computer. Is there anyway to test it to see if it's bad ? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks guys !!

if you also tell us which operating system we may be able to give more specific instructions to help you diagnose.

My first question is does the wireless "network connection" show you as having an IP address. in xp this in the control panel.

Second question, any other computers seeing the internet, if so are they wireless or connected by a cable

given these we can see a) are you connecting to the router and b) if the router is connecting to the internet.

We are using Windows XP.
There is WEP.
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.
The Ip address is there yes,
It is just the one notebook .
We have a cable modem, connected to a linksys router and the notebook can see the wireless network we setup. It says we are connected.

Sounds like you are firewalled at the laptop; it may very well be on YOUR network, but it is being blocked from connecting to the outside world.

have you tried using a network cable instead of wireless to the router ? does that work.

If it doesnt work then have you tried the notebook directly connected to the modem and does that work. Trying to see if it's wireless, the router or networking in general (e.g firewall as Charper1 is suggesting)

try turning the firewall off in windows xp . does that fix it ?

open IE, enter 192.168.1.1 and see if the linksys page comes up, if it does, look for the status to make sure the router is connected to the internet.

that should at least tell you if it is connected to the router, and if it is, that the connection between the modem and router is good

Open up a command prompt and type in: tracert Google

If it displays the route, IE is probably jacked up.

If not, you have problems with your connection somewhere along the line.

We can connect directly with the cable from the modem through the router.
We tried it w/o the firewall & it still didn't work. We'll try the other suggestions today also.
I appreciate the responses & we'll let you know what happens.

It didnt work.We took it back to Best Buy where we bought it & the router.Their techs (Geek Squad) tested it & think the router is bad. We'll try it again later in the week when we get time to try again & solve this. Thanks for the responses guys !!
