ProgDvb 4:2:2 Record MPG to DVD Question

Well, of course a DVD player isn't going to like 4:2:2. About the only places 4:2:2 are used is feeds and video before it's been through it's final processing and editing. All Mpeg2 video meant for end consumers is 4:2:0. That's why it's dificult to find devices and software that playback 4:2:2. So, yes, your going to have transcode this video if you want to get it in a form that can be played by a DVD player. I can't give you all the specific details of how to go about doing it as it's not something I regularly do, but I'm sure VLC can transcode form 4:2:2 to 4:2:0. So go to their website, read through all the documentation, and if necessary visit their forums and I'm sure you'll eventually be able to accomplish what you want.

Thanks for the post Stefan. I don't know much about 4:2:2 and 4:2:0. I'm learning. I didn't know a DVD player couldn't play 4:2:2, so now I've learned something else. That's why I like these forums. There's always someone out there that knows more, and if they share what they know, others can learn as well.

Thanks again to you, and everyone who posted replies. I think I now have enough information.

It was mentioned in an earlier post that VLC can transcode 4:2:2 to 4:2:0
at a maximum of 3mbps and that is going to make a much worse looking file,
I found that by using the Main Concept mpeg encoder that came with some
dvd editing software I can make much better higher bitrate conversions, I believe some Ulead stuff came with the Main Concepts mpeg encoder and I
wouldn't be surprised if allot of other programs have a suitable encoder that can write mpeg 4:2:0 streams. I would try to use VLC as a last resort if one
is unable to find a better solution. I use graphedit and the directshow filters
to convert my files.

action!

I haven't seen anything happening in this thread for a while.
I really want to see an answer (so I can do it, too) ;)

Apparently nobody took my advice.
VideoReDo to edit, maybe WinAVI to convert format , DVD Labs to author, and Nero to burn (only).
I make non-standard format DVDs with DVD Labs all the time, and they play fine on any DVD player made in the last 3+ years.
That includes 544x480, and 704x480. No reencoding required.
DVDL may bitch, but it'll do the job.

If you'll post the problem with details on the VideoReDo forum , I am pretty sure you can get some immediate help.
If not, I'll really be surprised.
Those guys are out to make everybody's life better.

btw, what was the actual raw format of the transmitted video.
I don't think it was 704x480 as mentioned above.
