Question about Joey

I just recently had the Hopper 3 installed and along with it also got a Joey for our second TV which added $7.00 a month to our bill. We had the Dish 722 before.

My question is: If I purchased a Joey from Amazon or some other source and used it to replace the rental unit, will this reduce my monthly bill by $7?

Another way to see it - They are not charging you for the use of the Joey. They are charging you for gaining access to programming in another room. There are ways to spend some money up front and have no monthly fee. You can connect directly to the Hopper with another cable that must reach where your second TV is, and then watch whatever channel the Hopper is on. Or you can get a Slingbox and watch whatever channel the Hopper is on. There are more exotic ways that will still result in only being able to watch the channel the Hopper is on. To watch whatever channel you want in the second room you need to pay the $7 and use a Joey, theirs or yours.

One advantage of buying your own Joey is if the room is not always used, like not for a month or months at a time you can turn off the service or turn on the service in that room. If it is their Joey and you turn off the service to that room you have to return the Joey to them. otherwise using their Joey is the way to go.

Dish Anywhere is an option on the second TV, especially if it is not in constant use.

Thanks for the reply. I have a Slingbox I used with the old 722 receiver. I understood the Hopper 3 has the Sling built in. Have not figured out how to find and use it yet. Wish it would have came with a paper manual. So my only way to reduce my monthly cost is to return the Joey and watch the same shows on both TV's. Wife will not like that! We went for the 2 yr. contract and fixed pricing. Now I'm wondering if I can even return the Joey or do something like dropping the Local TV charges during the next 24 months.

If you have a Amazon FireStick (and some other Android streaming devices), you can use the Dish Anywhere app to watch TV using the Sling functionality in the Hopper3 on a remote TV.

Assuming that you have a good WiFi home network you could use Dish Anywhere on an Amazon Fire Stick to watch a different show from the Hopper3. And you should be able to return the Joey to reduce your monthly price. I use Dish Anywhere on the Fire Stick to watch programs on my basement TV when using my exercise bike. It works well.

As others have pointed you could use the Dish anywhere app that could take the place of a Joey, you could watch something different than what the Hopper is, though I would say not as convenient. Ok for occasional viewing in that room . The cost of the Joey is $84 a year so only you can decide if it is worth it or not.

Generally you can always drop or change equipment under contract but read your contract to make sure it doesn't affect some other pricing like maybe a lowered DVR charge. And yes you can drop the Locals. To be fair DISH does make the charges clear it shouldn't be a surprise now that it cost $7.

The OP said that his wife watches the Joey so $7 a month IMHO is a cheap price to pay for domestic tranquility. :)

We use a Firestick with the DishAnywhere app on the bedroom TV in our motorhome. When we're underway, sometimes my wife goes back there and connects it to the Hopper 2 at our NY cottage and watches her favorite soap while I'm driving along the Interstate. When we're stationary with the RV Hopper 2 active, we just connect to that one of course when one of us wants to watch a different program.
