does conus mean its on a spot beam and can only reach a certain area ? or is it a scrambled channel ?

Conus = Continental US, it's the coverage area, nothing to do with scrambled / security

The entire country.

Spot beamed would be to perhaps a 400 mile diameter circle.
I live in a spotbeam for Dish Network, supplying Los Angeles, California.

Most FTA satellite signals would be aimed to conform to the boundaries of one or more countries.
example: Galaxy 25 @ 97º, on Ku band.

I was just too slow looking up a sample map -
Galaxy 27 @ 129º does have a Ku spotbeam for Hawaii.
... and one for C-band, too.

so if i set up my new lnb and have it aimed in the carolinas will the locals still be blocked ?
it has l and r and h and v on it

yes those are scrambled channels so you cant get them

There are only 2 types of spotbeams we worry about in FTA
-the Atlantic satellites where there are "europe" footprint and "us" footrpint
-one C-Band satellite has spotbeams for Alaska and British Columbia

I saw that I am learning and not sure myself but on lyngsat web site it says on echostar 5 129
all denver locals are on FTA not scramble and these are HD channels.
I can't confirm this

I do not know if they are FTA, but they are on transponder 2 at 129°.

They got to be under video encryption it says MPEG-4/HD
The others are different
