Tulsa. Ok.
Have just had my fourth call from Dish in three days.

After I left them 14 months ago I asked for my name to be removed from any/all call-lists ... I assumed that this had been done as I did not hear from them again .. until Tuesday night.

Tues I got a call from an account supervisor from Dish Network asking for me by name telling me that they wanted to let me know about new offers that they had.

I politely told them I was now under contract with Directv, that I had asked for my name to be removed when i canceled and asked them to do so again ..

Weds - I got two calls ... same "offers" line .... first time i told them to remove my name and not to call again .. second time I told them that the next call would be recorded and after that the FTC would be notified and they could enjoy the fine ...

Today I got yet another call ... told them that the call was being recorded and that I would now pass on this information to the FTC as I I now consider this harassment.

I don't care if it is Dish direct or a retailer .. if it is a retailer - it was dish that gave them my details.

If it is Dish .. shame on them.

I guess their upcoming numbers are going to be shocking if my experience over the past few days have been anything to go by ... blanket bomb anyone that they have ever done business with and quickly do deals to get as much HD online as possible in order to stop the bloodbath ...

Calls are coming from 1-888-285-9984

Edit - report made to FTC ... let's hope they are fined for this again ...

they have the right to call you. you are not protected from the due not call list. since you had an existing business relationship with dish, they have the right to call you for up to 18 months since your last purchase. you said u canceled services 14 months ago, so you go another 4 more months of them legally calling you. perhaps you should be fined for making false reports to the ftc

Actually, that's not the case. I used to work as a programmer for a telemarketing firm, and if a client asks you to take them off your list, you have to honor their request. That was in effect before the National DNC list came into play.

One other thing to do is to tell the center that you want on their own DNC list. Centers are to carry their own DNC list in house that they are supposed to honor, but when you say take my name off "your" list, that is taken as the list for the client.

Now, some of this may differ in ways from state to state. Contact your state's Attorney General for clarification. Also, the AG's office can file a complaint on your behalf. That typically wakes up a call center when they get a complaint inquiry from a state's AG office.

Wrong ... If i ask them to stop calling - even if I have an existing relationship - they then have to stop calling. I'm glad your opinion is just that .....

One caveat: if a consumer asks a company not to call, the company may not call, even if there is an established business relationship. Indeed, a company may not call a consumer - regardless of whether the consumer's number is on the registry - if the consumer has asked to be put on the company's own do not call list.

On my VOIP service I have a call blocking feature that works wonders. They only call me once, then their number gets blocked :)

Yup - my current VOIP provider does not offer this service .. and I should not need to have this service .... Dish Network should follow the law ... but we all know how well they do that ...

Never mind .... let's hope a $10k fine will follow ....

Edit - looks like they get more business from illegal harassment than it costs them in fines ..

http://www.denverpost.com/ci_11992838?source=bb

seems like this is nothing new to them.

" The FTC said Dish is the biggest violator to date based on the number of complaints, more than 20,000, to the agency."
From march this year.

To be fair and balanced .. from the same article .. " The biggest settlement to date involved satellite television provider DirecTV Inc., which paid a $5.3 million settlement."

Seems like the fines are not nearly big enough ....

ahh, the website i went to did not post that second paragraph caveat. nice info there. excuse me while i remove my foot from my mouth....

If you see the number coming up on your caller ID ,just dont answer the phone.I know its annoying as I get alot of calls like this as since I work Graveyards it is a nuisance when I am called during the day.My VOIP service has a" do not disturb" that you can turn on(My problem is I forget to turn back off)I give my cell phone number out to only people who know my schedule and will not bother me unless its an emergency,so having landline off isnt that big a deal.I agree you shouldnt have to keep telling them to stop calling but lifes too short to stress over something like a phone call..You have lots of options ,one is to change your number or just dont answer .

Not answering will not stop the calls coming ...

Bottom line is ... it is illegal for them to be calling me after I have asked them to stop .. once I have told them I no longer want calls from them .. I should not have to go out of my way to stop the harassment ..

Who to Contact ?

Dont get me wrong I am with you on this one,I do consider it Harrassment for Dish to continue calling,However you need to determine if what they are doing is auctually Illegal(Dish I am sure has a legal dept that would say otherwise)If you can determine that it is Illegal then find out who to contact to resolve.Unfortunately complaining about it here will get you nowhere,if they are breaking the law lets call them on it.File a complaint with proper authorities, they will continue to break the Law if they are not held responsible.
If doing all this is too much a hassle ,just turn off your phone, you dont have to be a Victim, quit whining and do something!

A federal law says that once I have asked them to stop calling me - they have to stop calling me ... if they call me they are breaking the law ... seems quite simple to me ...

As my signature says however .. i like to whine ... doing it here will call them out in public .. each time they call they will be called out in private by me over the phone ...

Each call I get will result in another complaint to the FTC ...

Does not really bother me as much as it comes across in my posts .. but i like to ruffle feathers where possible ... i'll be CC'ing ceo@echostar too - the more people i can whine to the better ...

:)

Complaining makes me feel better ....

:D

I definitely need to pick up something like this then, as I never seem to be able to escape the telemarketers. I'll sit down to have dinner with family and receive a barrage of phone-calls; it never fails.

There are free programs that block telemarketers calls. All you need is modem connected to your phone line. Do a quick search for "call blockers." I used Phonetray before switching to voip. Voip nearly eliminates unwanted calls.

I do not use the DNC features, because I know how to handle such calls, if a call comes in I know it is a sales call, either I ignore it or pick up the phone, and after identifying it is a telemarketing call that I have no interest in, just click the phone without saying anything.

The benefit of receiving such calls from time to time is, use the E* calls as an example, I would know what kind of deals they would offer me, and then turn around call DirecTV and told them this was what E* just offered me to switch, DirecTV would then try to match the offer with some discounts. And when I was with E*, I used DirecTV's calls for the same reason, and used the ATT Uverse calls against Comcast offer, etc...

Don't take it personal, take advantage of it. Of course many people consider such calls annoying and are very bothered by them, I don't blame them for using the DNC list. I just have never been so bothered by them yet, and instead took the advantage of such calls.

The technique as I explained above was told to me by a telemarketer himself a long time ago. Telemarketers are working against the clock, they do not fool around, they are under a great deal of pressure to make a sale in so many calls made in so much time. If they call someone on their list, and the phone is picked up, and when the sale person starts to talk, he gets cut off after a few sentences, he concludes:

1) The guy's phone is no good, or
2) The guy knows how to handle a sales call.

In the first case, he will cross out the name on the list because he has no time to waste calling on a bad phone, if it is the later, he will also cross out the name because he knows the success rate is next to none. That is why even though I am not on any DNC list, I do not get a lot of calls. One telemarketer calls me once, will likely not call again without me arguing with them at all, not saying a single word.

If you really feel you need to make a point to him/her, you can say nicely, no I am not interested but thank you for the call, and of course he/she continues to talk over you, wait a few seconds then click the phone, it will tell the sales person exactly the same two scenarios above, either your phone does not work well, or you know how to say no. They would not want to waste their time on you.

I know it is a jungle out there, but if you can find a very simple way to avoid the jungle, at the same time allow you to pick up a nice flower or two along the way, why lock yourself up and refuse to take that walk? The key is of course to find that simple way to avoid the jungle, the situation is different for different folks.
