[VOOM] DISH Network Local HD Channels?

Can anyone confirm if dish network provides locals in HD either via OTA
or Satellite?

Their website says they offer CBS in HD but that's it. I was told they
offer all locals in HD.

True?

------------------------

I talked to a Dish CSR. The while the local SD channels come through the satellite feed (depend on your area), the local HD channels have to use an OTA.

This is the same case with Direct, although I did hear rumors that Direct would be including local HD channels through their satellite feed since they just added some more satellites.

I'm personally going with Dish till the end of the summer before I move into my new house. If Direct has implemented all of the rumored changes (more HD channels, HD locals through satellite feed, lease option for HD DVR) then I may go with Direct in the new house.

Dish Network provides CBS-HD as long as you are in a CBS O&O market and it will require a two dish solution since CBSHD is on 61.5 and the main core of channels are at 119&110.

E* provides CBSHD, NBCHD, FoxHD and ABCHD as long as you are in a O&O market. It requires a three LNB elliptical dish.

Both E* and D* provide you with the choice of getting your LOCALS in HD via OTA.

I hope that answers your question.

True?

If your locals broadcast in HD, AND they are using a strong signal, AND your view to the broadcast towers isn't blocked, THEN you can use an OTA antenna to pick them up with Dish. Same with Direct for now.

CBS-HD is available on the Dish satellite (actually it's a wing satellite) if you qualify. Direct offers the major networks in HD on their satellite if you qualify.

It depends on the receiver you get... For example, the new 942 HD DVR
has an OTA input that has both a digital (ATSC) and analog tuner.
There's some question over whether it gets the program info properly
if you don't have a local's subscription or not and whether the locals
to PSIP properly or some such, though I'm not sure of all the details.

Right now I'm still leaning towards getting Dish and this unit but I'm
still waiting at least another couple of days or weeks to see if
Voom21 shows up somewhere.

Hmmmm, Sean, Since my Voom dish is pointed at 61.5 and I put one of my spare E* receivers on it to see what was there. How come I can only see foreign programming? Do I need to put my activated receivers on it to see more?

I signed up for Dish online yesterday (Sunday) and called today to confirm my sign up options. They said I didn't get it right. If I want to record HD with a dual tuner it would cost me an additional $240 up front under their special promotion. If I only want the single tuner 921 it would cost me an additional $500 up front as I HAD to purchase the unit. These fees are in addition to the regular setup and monthly charges. I ended up going with Comcast. It cost about $20/mo more than Dish but I don't have to buy any equipment and there is no contract.

Dish is definitely off track. The investment in an HD DVR is not worth the skimpy HD selection Dish is offering. Cox is offering a $13.95/Month DVR in my area with no contract and no installation fees. I think the satellite vs cable has come full circle...with cable having a distinct advantage over satellite.

The lessor of the remaining poor alternatives

After having Voom with equipment and stb's for free or rental I just not about to spend big bucks on Dish or Direct which offers very little HD content
HD is evolving all be very slow now that Voom is out of the competition at the end of the month. As I see it keeping your digital OTA antenna in some areas of the country seems the best alternative and the cheapest with the most rewards. and if you must have HD (like Me) I will subscribe to Comast cable for a trial period, while they neither have high quality or content, they do have free installation / no investment or contract and you can opt out at a moments notice. (( I guess you get what you pay for )) HD providers can change for the good or bad at anytime it appears.

My choice is to try Comcast ( kind of trial period ) keep it for a while or just resort to getting 43 digital with HD channels for free via OTA and just wait to see what happens in the next year or so. without any make investment or contract.

Hay if were not for poor choices, I'd have no choices at all after Voom :(

Remember to ask Comcast for their Disk Win Back (Or Dish Buy back?) promotion.

At this time dish does not offer locals in HD
They only offer the 6 channels or so

[VOOM] Re: DISH Network Local HD Channels?

I have DishNetwork. I purchase local channels through Dish for my other
TV (and therefore, for my HD TV, too).

My HD reciever (which I lease for $5 a month, but the second receiver
fee is waived) accepts antenna input and I get local HD OTA.

If it is an HD receiver and it is activated, you should be able to see
CBSHD. That's about the only thing they have in that bird plus a lot of
international channels.

The $250 for the 942 is the LEASE option, not the purchase. It lists
at $849 to buy but I've seen it as low as $600 somewhere.... I like
the lease option as when mpeg-4 comes out you are not stuck with
obsolete equipment... I get all my locals OTA so I think this set up
will work nicely for me. And I like the 942's single and dual modes.

Yeah I'm not crazy about $250 to lease an HD DVR, but I live in the
sticks and we have no cable. So it's D* or E* for me (I won't get one
of those big big dishes). Right now I'm drawn to Dish for the lease
option as I don't want to spend even more on a box I own that won't
work in a year (or however long until mp4 is rolled out).

I know the limited HD on both D* and E* is sad after coming from Voom.
But I haven't ordered yet in hopes that Voom 21 shows up somewhere
before I do. At least Rush and Rave!

Both D* and E* have Fox Sports regional which is a big plus for me. I
really missed watching my local college teams play basketball last year!

/Sean

Sean,

You are correct. Sorry about not being more specific. The $240 up front is for the lease option. That is the upfront fee and then you pay a regular monthly fee for the DVR as well as the HD service. What doesn't make sense is that if I only want the single channel 921 receiver/DVR I must purchase it. It's not available for lease. I talked to 2 different CSRs. They are refunding my $49.99 one time setup fee.

I too feel that the Voom exclusive channels are going to show up somewhere in the near future. I have no investment in going with Comcast and I get my local Miami-Fort Lauderdale channels in HD. That is the best option for me so until something better comes along....... Oh yea, going with Comcast also reduced my cable broadband cost by $15 per month :).

I have talked to several DISH reps. I can say that none of them gave
me a warm fuzzy on this issue. I did talk to one that seemed half
knowledgeable and he said the DISH 811 will receive the locals in HD.
I have my install 4/22. I will let you know for sure then. I do not
believe they supply an OTA antenna; however, I will use my VOOM
antenna.

I get all the networks in high def in my area with Dish over the air. They are not yet available on satellite here but are in a nearby city. I use Dish for ota because the Voom receiver would not pull all of them in.
Sure hate to Voom go away though. The quality is noticeably better than Dish and I have had no problems at all with Voom except trying to get it installed at the beginning.
Lets keep our fingers crossed that somehow they will stay around or come back.
