School officials suspended about 23 students last week for displaying Confederate flags on notebooks, vehicles and clothing, and three more students were suspended for wearing white T-shirts, which are not allowed under the school's dress code.

Standing next to his '91 red Ford Mustang, senior Josh Hyatt wore a gray T-shirt that read: "Legends of the South" on the front and "Property of the Confederate States of America on the back." "I don't feel like getting suspended again," he said, acknowledging that a majority of his wardrobe boasted the flag. "But heritage ain't got nothing to do with hatred," he said.
