I have a VIP722 with several HD movies that I have recorded from HBO and Starz and am beginning to run out of room. Ive been thinking about buying a DVD recorder from Wal-Mart to record the movies that ive recorded onto my VIP722.

My question is: Will this work? Can you hook a dvd recorder to your tv and then record the HD movies off of your VIP722?

Before you say, Im not interested in buying a external HDD either. I will be using the dvd recorder for other things also.

Thanks!

You can hook up the DVD recorder to the SD outputs (such as composite & RCA audio) of the ViP722 (& other) DVR. It will record an SD version of the HD program, and do it in real time. No accelerated recording like you can get with an EHD.

You will be able to record them unless they are ones that have security coding inbeded. Must be recorded in real time as they play off of the DVR as though you are watching them. They will not be in HD any more.

Batterydude,

Sure you can record from the Component and or S-video Outputs from the receiver, remember though you with lose the HD resolution on your recorded DVD's. You will have to record in realtime. Lastly any onscreen popups, Caller ID dialog box or any other such popup's will show up in your DVD recording.

Personally I see the External HDD recording much better in terms of PQ, as well as ease of use. Any transferred recordings do so in the background thereby allowing you to use your receiver to watch other content at the same time.

+1 on the inbeded security. I'm afraid you'll find that you won't be able to copy the movies from HBO & Starz on any DVD recorder you buy now because of this B S. I have 2 DVD recorders--the OLD one (at least 5 years old) does allow me to copy them, the newer one (2 years old?) does not. I'm talking about premium channels, HBO, etc, and PPV-not other programming. No problems with regular programming on either recorder with those and although not HD the pq is good when recorded via component.

With the downgrade of quality to DVD, the EHD is a much better investment. There, I said it.;)

I have a DVD recorder that I rarely use now. Thought I'd use it a lot. Just not worth it with DVRs and EHDs.

I have a few more VHS tapes to copy, and a few programs off my 508, then it will just be a player.

How much are you willing to spend on a dvd recorder vs. another hard drive? The hard drives are going down in price all the time can find really good deals.

I don't have premium channels, so I've never come up against this. There's Macrovision encryption on the analog outputs of the DVR?

Also, letting the DVR play back movies in real time is a bit boring, but my wife finds it useful for archiving clips from shows like So You Think You Can Dance. She can set the DVD-R to it's highest quality setting (still not as good as a commercial DVD), and pack several weeks' worth of excerpts on a 1-hour disc.

I saw a Component HD recorder that accept component output & record to HDD.....not sure if it will be usefull to him....if he looking for HD archives.

I havent tried it...but copy protection on premium channels....wow....didnt saw any announcement on it though

If your gonna do it , try to get an older recorder.

If you can wait a few more months, there are a couple of HD digital recorders coming on the market that record live video to a harddisc. Then the video can be transfered to a computer and burned on a dvd.

I've seen some homemade setups like this and the videos come out like regular dvd quality.

but if you want total HD, then you have to go with a blue ray burner.
Considering their prices, your better off just going with a nice big EHD and buying a dvd burner for your pc to do the other stuff.
