I already posted this in another forum but wanted to get more feedback.
So I have a problem. First I'll state the problem them my observations. The problem is I have a slim 5 sat that feeds 4 sat receivers. One of the receivers, the one in the bedroom will suddenly lose signal and only comes back up if one of the other receivers is turned on and a channel is changed. Mind you I have not ever seen this problem. Every time I go there the system is fine. The receivers are new hr21's. I swapped the problem receiver with another receiver and the problem stayed in the bedroom. I checked all the wiring and it appeared fine. I swapped out the zinwell multiswitch for another and the problem persisted. I looked in the attic and crawl space to make sure another switch was not previously put into the system. The signal strength is in the high 90's and when the signal problem happens the other receivers are fine. So today I go back to measure the distance and check to see if the cable passes tests. One thing I found out is that one of their receivers has a dead sat input. It registers the sat input when you check the numbers but when you check the sat signal meter input two is dead. The wires are both live as I put in another receiver to test and all worked. So one question is could a faulty receiver backfeed something into the system that could cause a problem? Lastly I measured the distances. The distance from the multiswitch to the bedroom receiver is 130 ft. The distance to the dish is about 210 ft. The other receivers are all closer. Could this problem be caused by distance? Sorry for the long explanation. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

You are probably getting too much power drop in the lines to the dish, so the LNB is losing power. If you are using a Zinwell WB68 the multiswitch is unpowered and all the power has to come from the receivers. It looks like under some circumstances when only one receiver is being connected by the multiswitch to a line to the dish, your power is marginal. When you connect a second receiver to the same line (by selecting a channel using the same satellite/transponder block) there are two receivers providing power and everything works OK.
Your cables should all be RG6 with solid copper cores, I suspect they are copper-covered steel which has higher power losses.
Best way to resolve this is to replace the WB68 with a WB616 which is powered.
