So I was reading around and seen that shawdirect formal starchoice uses digicipher 2 from motorla. Um is this not the same as 4dtv? Lets flood shaw with requests to alacarte their stuff for 4dtv receivers? Heck I know when I get my bid dish up or even a small ku. That would be killer. Instead of using one of their systems. I email them to ask them why not and alacart stuff.
This could be a answer if we all hit them up.

Per Industry Canada they are NOT allowed to sell programming in the United States. Per the FCC they are not allowed to sell programming in the United States.

Of course things go on but no one would ever admit to it.

um...you havent done much research huh?

they are a Canadian direct to home satellite provider. They use the same modulation scheme (DCII) as other receivers do because they (Shaw) use Motorola equipment (outdated stuff if you ask me) ;)
Just because they use the same DCII doesnt mean "oh lets see if they will let us get those channels"...thats about as asinine of a statement as someone saying "Hey lets call Bell TV and see if they can put some of their channels on my Dish Network system. After all they both use DVB". Sorry if I sound rude but that is harsh reality.

ikki already mentioned part of it. They cannot sell to addresses that are not Canadian. Do people in the US subscribe to it? Yes. I am one of them by using a Canadian address. Also, most of those channels are Canadian channels of the US version (some folks call them basterdized) so they're not the same as the US counterpart.

Shaw already pays providers for the rights to those channels :) They sell packages of channels to work with THEIR system...not another system. If you want a specific channel (or channels) so bad, subscribe to Dish/Direct/Bell/Shaw/cable.

no problem

I did find a few other things after posting. I did know that bell will not sell to us and dish will not sell to canada. I didn't realize it was for all. I found a website from canada for large c band dishes that says they will sell to U.S. But they didn't do alacart and most of there stuff was movie channels. I also found another post that says shaw will only allow their equiptment with their serial numbers. I found a few other people asking the question around the web. But no 100% answer. I remeber reading something about pointing your 4dtv and getting a few freebies but is this the one that can overload the wrong receiver?

Thanks,

Josh

You can point a 4DTV at AnikF1 and get a few channels. If you have a 920 or 922 it will overload the memory (because it downloads the maps) requiring a master reset

The 905 is OK because it doesnt have an analog tuner. It does slow down the receiver's response though (been there tried that)
TVRO Pro got a used Starchoice reciever for those couple freebies :)

If you can get a old *Choice receiver DSR 405, 410 etc and use a small ku dish you can also watch the free channels without worrying about TDT overload on the 4DTV. That's what I do. Access and Knowledge TV are pretty good. Very good picture quality too.

Once the Canadian digital switchover takes place, we (Canadians) should be able to buy our channels alacarte, or so the CRTC states as they will then have the technology to provide individual channels. They do not now due to many of the cable subscribers still are on analoge cable.

It seems to me that the Canadian providers do not have this phobia of alacarte programming the Americans providers do. Here they want to package the channels in multiples of 50 or 100 and blame it on the suppliers.

I hope the day comes when paying to use an "appliance" such as a DVR is outlawed also. If I own it, it's no one's business to charge me to use it. Just like the HD access fees they have in place, it's just another way to nickle and dime.

Most providers have some channels that you can get by themselves. The Canadian DTH and cable setups programming wise are actually better than the US versions.

Shaw & Bell have "themes" you can purchase.
Don't want sports? Dont get that package
DOnt want kids channels? DOnt get that theme

It actually is nice because there are many different options out there versus Dish & DIrect where they have 3 or 4 packages and thats it

Your right Ice Shaw offers better choice with theme packs. Ala carte is what is needed here in the US but not likely. If the Canadians get it it may be time to sub to Shaw.

Thanks guys it is a Star choice reciever that my doctor gave me i also have the Star choice dish and lnb so i think i will hook it up and see what i can get gives me some thing to play with worth a try anyways

the CRTC has it right in Canada. Any channel that is designated as "Category 2" can be sold alacarte. Category 1 cannot be sold alacarte

Cat 1 HAS to be carried
Cat 2 CAN be carried

Here is the list of category 2 channels
