So fanboys, what is so great about your format?

So why be closed minded supporting one format. Why limit youself. If you can afford it, get them both. I somtimes think people bash electronics because they can't afford it and that's the main reason to hate. For example:

I think the ps3 is too expensive or I'll wait to it come down in price. But at the same time, you're posting any negative article you read on the net. Why because deep down you want one and it out of your reach to have. So, you try to find another reason to support the main reason. Suppose the price never come down. What will you do? Everything can't be cheap for your pockets. Some thing is a lot of money to own.

Amen You hit the nail on the head!:up

Last year I listened to all the hubbub about how great HD-DVD was and how bad BD was. That the BD was overblown and that HD-DVD was the bomb. Well you got one right. HD-DVD is a bomb and it is about to be blown up by BD.

I hope all of you are here 3 months from now when BD movie sales are 70% of all HD movie sales in the US. I'll make a prediction right here right now -- Disney's Pirate Movies will sell over 2 million copies each within weeks of there release if Buena Vista can make them. When that happens it is over for HD-DVD --the fat lady will start singing.

On another note, the PS3 is so expensive it sold over 240,000 in January with only one really good game to play. So why is it selling at all? And just how many units of PS3 are going to sell in March? My prediction is if the PS3 sells to 3 to 4 million WorldWide (Right now it is at about 1.7 million in Canada, Japan and the US) so if thru the end of March the PS3 can sell another 1.5 mill it will have sold in three months what took the XBOX360 to sell in 8 months from its launch.

Maybe these numbers are rediculous but Sony is delivering 1.5 mil units to Europe, it is already the fastest selling console (including the Wii) on the internet sites in Europe. If this unit sells out in Europe and Australia and Motorstorm and a few other titles hit in March by the end you could seriously be looking at 4 to 5 million PS3's sold in just 4 months. I don't see that as a bad thing.

And every one of them will play BD movies -- can we say goodbye HD-DVD?:D

Oh one more thing, I would rather pay $600 for a product that works, doesn't overheat, delivers on the HD side and provides future safeguards like BluRay and HDMI 1.3 included then $400 for a product that freezes up , burns up, smokes my discs , doesn't play HD movies out of the box and is already being replaced 18 months into production.

Does it count if the PS3 gets to 10 million sold quicker then the XBOX360 or just when the PS3 bypasses the number of XBOX360 sold? Reason I ask is that both systems are going to rock and who cares which one you have (or both if your are fortunate) because those 10 mill PS3s will also be 10 Mill BluRay players too. Maybe a few of these folks will actually buy a BluRay movie huh?

JoeSP,

If what you say is true, (that the Pirate movies will sell 2 Mil and kill HD-DVD), then it will not be the format that causes people to chose their HD discs, it will be the SOFTWARE that's released. Which format does a better job will not factor into the equation. Same thing will happen when "Cars" comes out. Slam dunk for BluRay!

It's such a stupid argument. "X" will win because the good stuff is coming out on "X" and not "Y". These are decisions made in back rooms by companies with vested interests in each format.

If, in your example, the "Pirates" movies came out on the same day in BOTH FORMATS, and BluRay "pirates" discs out sold HD-DVD "pirates" discs, then the reason would be that the public thought that BluRay was better and you would be 100% right and "THE MAN". :D

However, the public will not think BluRay is the better delivery system, they will think that BluRay has the better software.

Fair is fair, put the stuff out in both formats and let the chips fall where they may. Anything else is just "corporate planning".

========================================================
I have both HD-DVD and BluRay, so there!

I always thought Blu-Ray would win just because of the capacity. I bought an HD-DVD player when they first came out because of the good deal the value electronics had here. I subsequently bought about 50 HD-DVDs because they were good movies and the quality was excellent.

I have pretty much paused in my buying at the moment because I am beginning to see the mementum building behind Blu-Ray and I see the eventual loss of the HD-DVD format. I thought for sure they would have a dual format player that really worked (not one that halfway does one format as they have now). Now I am worried about buying more into a format that could be leaving sooner than later. Sony has really done a good job of keeping dual format players off of the market.

I still have not bought a blu-ray player, I am starting to think I might get a PS3 as a player to just have the dual functionality of both Blu-Ray and video games. So for now I sit on the sidelines to see which way it is going to go. I did the same thing with laser discs many years ago, I stopped buying them as soon as DVDs came out. I probably have 300 LDs sitting around...

By my purchases to date (probably $2k in HD-DVD) I am probably an HD-DVD fan boy, but am considering converting...

Please clarify "weeks" is that 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 10 weeks, 52 weeks? DVD+BD or BD only?

If it's BD only, are you expecting a lot of people to buy multiple copies to get to 2 million sold? There won't be 2 million players out there to play the copies on so your prediction is doomed from the start.

At a sell rate of 1/4 million a month (December's numbers which are inflated for Christmas) there would be less than 1.5 million PS3s out there. There will also be less than 500,000 standalone players sold. You're also expecting a 100% buy-in on the titles. It won't happen, so your prediction is already doomed.

You are fast becoming the tabloid journalist of this forum; accuracy be damned, just go for the headline. Thanks for some Saturday morning amusement.

With your prediction ability, it's a good thing you don't live in Vegas and play the SportsBook.

And will you please stop talking about my ex-wife? :p

The only dual format player I know of, the LG, is actually a Blu-ray player that has some HD-DVD functionality. You'll get to watch the HD-DVD movie, but not the interactive extras. That sounds to me like it's Toshiba that is raining on the parade.

John, those Pirate movies are going to have BD-Java and they are going to have some very cool features:

Disney's 'Pirates of the Caribbean' Booty to Include Two Discs, BD-Java Features

In a pair of Blu-ray firsts for Disney, the studio will unleash their premiere two-disc and BD-Java-enhanced titles when it brings the blockbuster 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films to the format this spring.

As first announced late last month, the studio is set to debut 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' on Blu-ray on May 22, just in time for the theatrical premiere of the third film in the series, 'At World's End.'

With expectations high for both releases to be a "trojan horse" for Blu-ray -- meaning the kind of huge A-list titles that will entice new consumers to finally dive into the format -- Disney appears to be pulling out all the stops to ensure that fans will not be disappointed.

Each title will be a "75GB" release, aka a BD-50 dual-layer disc for the movie, and an extra BD-25 single-layer disc with additional extras.

Tech specs include the usual 1080p video transfers and uncompressed PCM 5.1 surround tracks. Extras will replicate the existing, feature-packed standard-def DVD versions.

And exclusive to the Blu-ray releases will be two BD-Java bonuses. 'The Curse of the Black Pearl' will include "Scoundrels of the Sea," an interactive in-movie feature that presents facts on-screen about the legends and lore of pirates. 'Dead Man's Chest' will include an "exciting" new Java feature called "Liar's Dice," a single-player game shot in live-action HD video.

Disney has set a $34.95 suggested list price for each of the 'Pirates' flicks.

Full specs for both titles have now been added to our Blu-ray Release Schedule under May 22.

I have to give kudos to HighDef digest for this information. I for one am very excited about BD-Java features as the iHD features on HD-DVD are pretty cool and it is time for BD to bring their interactive features to the movies. Your question is about what I am refering to... I believe that just about everyone that has a BD player is going to want to see what all the fuss is about when it comes to BD-Java and interactive features. These will be some of the first BD movies using interactive features and it sounds like Disney is trying to hit a home run and I think that they will. So lets say within 3 months because 2 million BD copies is alot of manufacturing. Also, I am considering the world market not just North America because doesn't HD-DVD and BluRay compete in the World Market? Remember I said if they could make them, Those Pirate movies are the bomb, and having them in BD is going to be great.

Also, John before you accuse me of lying and making stuff up (isn't that what tabliod journalism is) how about you come clean. I always post where I get my information from. If I make a prediction--that is all it is. I am having fun with numbers but that is all it is. But I don't pull this stuff out of my hat. If asked I always post where I get my information from and why I believe something is going to happen. How about you post something that I posted that was an outright lie were I was deliberately trying to deceive anyone and I will not post here for 1 month.

BTW, FYI back in December I predicted that BD would outsell HD-DVD and pass HD-DVD by the end of Janurary - middle of February. I made that prediction not on PS3 sales but on stated releases and reviews of BD titles since the begining of November. I was jumped on pretty hard by the HD-DVD fanboys but I guess I got lucky because you and I both know that I don't know a thing about High Def, huh?

Sony is already promising over 1 million PS3s for Europe launch. I bet they will be able to deliver now that I see Walmart stocking them in town, the supply seems to have caught up with demand in the US.

As we have seen, delivering just might be easier then selling. Seems the Wii is the only game in town that sells out as soon as it gets out on the shelves. It would be great for Sony if they sold out the first day or two and they actually delivered 1 million units. However, the PS3 is going to be more expensive in Europe then here in the States. Does anyone think that $100 less per system and Sony would sell all they could make -- providing games like Motorstorm are actually ready for sell?

A bunch of text that was unrelated to the discussion at hand was deleted.

You're talking an 80-90% conversion rate. That is completely unrealistic.

I have numerous sources on both sides of the fence. This includes contacts at MS, mastering houses and CE manufacturers.

Tabloid journalism is about sensationalism, fact based and not so fact based. You have the same techniques with sensationalism.

I am having fun with numbers but that is all it is. But I don't pull this stuff out of my hat.

You just pulled the prediction out of, well the polite term is thin air. You can figure out the body part that's less polite on your own.

If asked I always post where I get my information from and why I believe something is going to happen. How about you post something that I posted that was an outright lie were I was deliberately trying to deceive anyone and I will not post here for 1 month.

Yes, you're a bastion of objective information. I can surely find the information; but I'm not going to play the game.

You and several other people made the same prediction. I doubt sincerely that you made it first.

I couldn't resist because I ran across this in another thread.

I would never take the word of a laymen when compared to a review by a home theater mag who caters to the world of home theater enthusiasts.

The MSNBC article is M$ FUD. The guy probably did not even use a PS3. First, the controller is very easy to use and if you buy the BlueTooth remote you will be amazed at how responsive your PS3 is as a BD player.

For the article to be "M$ FUD" it should be authored by an employee of MS-NBC. That's the lie.

Here's the by-line:

Note the AP (Associated Press) tag? This indicates that this is syndicated content that MSNBC pays both the AP and the original author based on syndication contracts. AP content can be picked up by anyone with the syndication rights. It isn't M$ FUD, it's written outside of the MSNBC fold and out of their control.

So we should see you returning on what, March 26th?
