I ordered service from D* and requested two HR23-700s, a standard HD receiver and a SWM Dish. All was notated on my work orders. I know that this was notated because I called back and a different CSR read the notes and all the info was there. Then she went on to say that she can't promise that I will get the equipment that was on the ticket and I would get whatever the installer brought. I asked for the installer's phone number so that I could call and confirm my equipment with them and so I could tell them not to bother to show up without the correct dish. They told me they couldn't give me the number and would have the installer call me within a couple of hours. Of course that never happened.

I would prefer the HR23s, but as long as I get two DVRs with the 500 gig HDs (since I'm paying for one of them) I will be OK. However, I will not be OK without the SWM dish as I don't want to drill a bunch of new holes in my house. So the question is simple, if the installer doesn't have the SWM on the truck when he arrives do I just refuse the install?

Only you can answer that question. If you don't want the install without the SWM I guess you would refuse the install.

I guess I should edit the question. What I want to know is what happens if I refuse the install? Do they cancel the whole deal? Is there any way to ensure that I do get the SWM dish?

or you could do what i did. allow the install then switch out the lnb yourself. they're going real cheap now.

it depends on the installer and if they have it. i believe if you refuse the installation the whole deal can be canceled but wont be right away. you'll get a call from D 1st or they'll want to speak with you once the installer phones in the situation.

Yeah, I could do that, but I should not have to pay for one. The reasoning behind that statement is simple. When I called D* to get pricing over Dish, the CSR was really aggressive trying to make the sale. I told her that I was concerned about having to drill new holes and run a bunch of new lines (and I know that D* is not going to run them through the walls) when I could keep cable or go to Dish and have one line. That's when I asked about the SWM and her words were "I can give you one of those". So I went ahead and ordered. The problem is that when I reschedueled my install and talked to someone else at D*, I was told that there was no guarantee that I would be getting one. After reading some stories about D* installs, I find the latter to be more likely and am concerned that I was told what I want to hear in order to get me to order the service.

at this point wait till the install. double check this when the installer arrives and if they don't have it let him know you're not doing the install and why. D* will want to speak with you immediately. maybe they'll be able to work something out if there is an issue. let us know how it goes :)

Yeah, you're probably right. At this point I'm just borrowing trouble since I won't know anything until the installer shows up. It would make life a lot easier if they would just give me the installer's phone number, but they seem to want to guard that like a government secret.

don't worry about it. in any case just so you know these lnb's have gotten extremely cheap. some sellers on ebay are letting them go for $40 shipping included. if they don't show up with one have the installer only do a one line install which you already have in your home and then switch this out yourself. it's super easy to change your setup to the swm lnb. any questions just ask us. but in the end you might be worried over nothing.

Your install meets the requirements for a SWM. You are a new customer you have 5-8 tuners and at least 1 HD receiver. Reality is it still depends on equipment in the warehouse.

I'm not sure it makes a difference, but I got a SWM without asking for it. I DID ask for 1 HD DVR, 2 HD receivers and one standard box for a total of 4 hookups. Whether this "tripped" the SWM minimum, I can't say. A couple of weeks later I cancelled the plain vanilla box although that wasn't some MASTER plan on my part to get a SWM install.

Due to the fact that a DVR requires 2 lines without a SWM, I would think 2 DVRs would certainly come with SWM. With SWM, it is a very NEAT installation and after seeing it, I think it would be a deal breaker for me if I didn't get a SWM in any future installation.

I had the exact same order as you and was worried about whether or not I would get the SWM, but I just thought I would wait and see what he showed up with and order whatever I needed if I didn't get the SWM-LNB. Well, I did get it, and everything went great. The installer said that because I had the two DVRs, that triggered it. He even said that when he shows up to a place and it is just not realistic to run second lines, he just ends up going and getting the SWM equipment and then justifies it later. I think if it means they will lose a new customer, they will work with you. The SWM-LNB will become the standard, I think, because it is an unbelievable time saver with so many houses already prewired for cable. It is a pretty sweet setup.

I had my D* installed November 1st and they gave me a SWM. My guess is because I had 1-HD DVR and 1-STD DVR. I previously had Dishnetwork which only had Single tuner DVR so only one wire. The installer didnt want to drill additional holes in my walls.

I tweeted (Twittered) D* about SWM with 5 tuners and was basically told "SWM is limited and determined at the order point." With that answer, it seems that if I were to order it, they might would oblige. I also got a reply from a former D* installer saying I wouldn't get it because it's not nationwide.

I'm new to the forum and Directv. I had an installation of the dish and 2 hd dvrs a couple of weeks ago. Each dvr has 2 tuners which gave me a total of 4 tuners. The technician said that I did not qualify for the swm equipment because I didn't have 5 or more tuners getting installed. I told him I was going to cancel the order if I didn't get an swm. He called his supervisor and the supervisor approved the swm equipment.

whatever happened bob? did you get swm? let us know :)

I got an install today. 2 HD DVR and 2 SD boxes. Ended up with SWM and 2 HR-23. Guy said HR-23 are all he has right now. I was very pleased when I checked the box to see what model I was getting while he was installing the dish on my roof. I asked him about the SWM before he started and said I was definately getting it with teh 2 HD DVR's.

So since I will have 5 tuners total, but not two DVR's, I wonder if what you are saying qualifies me for SWM.

First of all, they don't know who the installer will be until the day of your install. They know the company but not the individual. Secondly, why do you think you are entitled to getting the installer's phone number? How would you feel if another company gave out your phone number to one of your customers without your approval?

I do hope you get the SWM, as your install meets the requirements for one, but like others have said...you will get what's on the truck at the time.
