TG Daily - Sony NEC announces 8x Blu-ray writer
Sony just announced an 8x Blu-ray writer in Europe. The BWU-300S burns single and dual layer BD-R media a speed of 288 Mb/s or 36 MB/s. At least in theory, this speed will allow users to fill an entire 25 GB disc in less than 12 minutes and a 50 GB disc in less than 24 minutes. Sony believes that a realistic estimate is that a 25 GB disc will be written in 15 minutes and a 50 GB disc in about 30 minutes.
The internal SATA drive also records DVDs at up to 16X, CDs up to 48X, and supports DVD-RAM recording.
Pricing has not been announced. There was no information when the drive will be available in the U.S.
