Star Trek: The Experience Closes in Las Vegas

A friend of mine just got back from Las Vegas this weekend and reported that the Star Trek: The Experience had closed its doors! Since this was a popular meeting place during the CES for this crowd (I remember Scott's picture of him behind a Warp Core Breach at Quark's), I thought I'd be the bearer of sad news and make the report.

Some links, and a press release from their site:

I had heard that when i was there a couple of months ago. I was totally geeked out by it, even bought some Sulu Wing Sauce :) The "transporter" effect they use on one of the experiences was awesome.

Like most things, it had run its course.

The Hilton is an odd sort of property. Its still one of the largest hotels in the world, especially counting the Vacation Club (time share) on the property, but its a $10 cab ride or the monorail and then a long walk through the Flamingo or Bally's then across the Strip to the main part of town where you can see other shows.

I enjoyed all the props on display & the Star Trek time line in the museum portion.I even got my photo taken with the Gorn.Too bad.Anyone know if it's going to open up some other place ?

From the articles, apparently not. Much of the stuff is already marked for return to Paramount and elsewhere. Lot's of interest in such an idea, but it doesn't look like it's panning out.

I'd like to see it, but it's not worth a trip to Vegas to do so.

I went their twice... it was probably the best part of my trips to vegas so it's ashame to see that it's closing. I enjoyed it a lot.

One of my regrets in not getting to Vegas was missing this. Somehow, I'm 42 years old and have never been to Vegas.

When Atlantic City is an hour away, there is less of a need to head west for gambling purposes....

I live in Vegas and do not regret ever going. I'm a big STOS and STNG fan too but I'm more interested in Gene's dream than hanging out with "trekkies" or looking at costumes and props.

When money means nothing and there is no hunger and the military is used for peacful endeavors and defense and scientific research, them maybe we will be living within the largest Star Trek convention ever.

(Mindful of the gambling thread restrictions)

I live 7 minutes from a "racino" with all of the gambling types (except sports gambling, which is only legal in Nevada) that Las Vegas has, and have to use a joke airport to get taken (at double price) on a puddlejumper to get to a real airport and real airplane, and I go to LV at least 5 times per year. There is SO much more to LV than just gambling. Shows. Shopping. Restaurants. Exhibits.

About anybody in the USA is not more than a couple of hours drive to a casino. You can play cards anywhere, but LV is a unique place where gambling is really a smaller part of the attraction than most would expect.

I agree completely. The LV experience is unlike anything else in the world, the shows, the food, the 24 hour-ness of it all, the showyness and the brashness. Sit for an hour at a machine by a casino entrance and you will see the whole world go past you. I've been to many casinos around the US but never twice, they are just a place to gamble, going to Vegas gives so much more.

Its not unusual for me to leave my hotel at about 10AM after breakfast and not return until 4AM, several days in a row there, and thats without hitting a single stripclub or gambling more then a couple hundred bucks in a week :)

They used to have a great Battlestar Galactica display in the old Sands Casino in AC.There was a huge model of the Battlestar & several working Centurians were there guarding it with the roving red eye and sound effects ! Quite neat.I was hoping the ST attraction would move to AC.Just wishful thinking I guess.

And by coincidence Bob,our tour guide was from Manasquan.

This sucks. I have never been to Vegas and wanted to see it.

The operator of the attraction and the Hilton were unable to come to terms on a new lease agreement, their lease expired at the end of August.

I missed getting to go to this for years and finally was in Vegas with a group that wanted to go end of last year. It was really neat to see and I was impressed with the level of detail in the props and set. The highlight was standing on the Enterprise bridge after seeing it on tv so much.

I am a sad bugger, I got the picture in the Captains chair with uniform.

Right after me though was a couple who got married on the bridge in full uniform, so i felt better.

Now, who wants to build a Star Wars Casino, make it the shape of a DeathStar?

I am very saddened to hear this. At least last April at NAB I decided to do it one more time and my favorite part, the time line, I recorded on AVCHD as a walk through.

My second favorite part was after the tour, I would have lunch or dinner and watch some nostalgic ST programs until the waiter would get impatient.

I wonder what it will be replaced with and if the Star Trek experience will open anywhere else?

I would think, and I could be wrong, but its too popular NOT to have it pop up in another location in some form. The ST time line was worth the visit to the LVH by itself for any ST fan.

The closing of Star Trek: The Experience is one of the regrets I have of not attending CES in the past few years. One of my friends from work got me a ST:TE refrigerator magnet so I have a (extremely) small piece of the Experience. But, on the whole, I would have rather seen it in person, especially the models of the ships.
