LNB types for FTA

1- DBS
which has a circular polarization (left/right)

2-3 KU linear polarization (Horizontal/Vertical)
this type is split into standard and universal
the difference is the LO for the universal has a wider freq range
and will pick up more stations

these LNBs get sent a differnt signal (wavetype) from the remote satellite
you can see this visually at
http://home.zonnet.nl/ham165/satellite/

I am not sure about fss

More details

Okay this got me curious

Snippet from
previous URL

Difference
SuperDISH LNBs down-convert the DBS spectrum (12.2 GHz to 12.7 GHz) to the frequency range the receiver and cable can handle (950 to 2150 MHz). The FSS LNB converts a different spectrum (11.7 GHz to 12.2 GHz) to the 950 to 2150 MHz frequency range.

From

KU universal LNB specs
LOW BAND HIGH BAND
INPUT FREQUENCY RANGE 10.70~11.70 GHz 11.70~12.75 GHz

From
http://www.dmsiusa.com/lnbf.htm
Ku Standard LNB specs
Input Frequency Range 11.7~12.25 GHz

Polarization for this Ku LNB is Linear as we saw before.
it also looks like the FSS spectrum overlaps on both types of Ku LNB.

From
http://repairfaq.cis.upenn.edu/sam/icets/satellte.htm

FSS satellites use horizontal and vertical polarization, whereas DBS satellites use left- and right-hand circular polarization.

so it looks like you might be able to use this FSS LNB as a standard Ku LNB if you wanted (not sure if you need other hardware).

i think you would only get the transponders (frequancys) that the fss lnb can handle.. and nothing else.. if u used it as a ku lnb. am i right? if thats the case i got 2 121 super dishes in my shed colecting dust (personal stash bought off of ebay)

using FSS LNB

the FSS frequencies seem an exact match for standard Ku (what you miss is the small extra range on a universal Ku).

only channel I know that you will miss is Cubavision international
See thread on this forum
http://www.satelliteguys.us/archive/index.php/t-28099.html

basic DVB Free to Air system will pick up the Pas 9 (58w) satellite where the "Cubavision International" TV channel is. (IF YOU HAVE A LINE OF SIGHT TO THE SATELLITE) The trick is to use a " Universal " LNBF for this channel

also in this thread:
its a good idea to also buy a standard Ku LNBF at the same time as they come in handy for pointing the dish if you or your installer use a signal meter.

see this thread for reason you want this kind of LNB
http://67.19.94.137/showthread.php?t=23602

If you only have universal LNB then you would have to use the on screen signal meter on the TV, remember you are looking for quality only signal strength means nothing.

Dish size and satellite broadcast footprint.
also Not using RG6 cable may also affect this quality at your location.

recommendatiions of 90 cm or 120 cm (1.2m) size dishes have been made.
Minimal size is 30 inches for most FTA
see
http://67.19.94.137/showthread.php?t=41912

You can also get a .3 db low noise LNB for pulling in weaker signals as stated in this same thread above

Also you should know I am a newbie and just started learning about this technology.

Would like to hear about your testing of these myself.
