For those replacing our 4DTV units with a DSR 410, perhaps a few steps that will make it easier. It assumes an LNBF and not a motorized polarity servo is in use with your 4D.

My first step: Have a working W-5 signal source, (stationary or moveable.).
My second step: Have good, verified signal on W-5 via the old 4D receiver.
My third step: Migrate to DSR-410, buy one month's "pre package" group, then when SRL offers pick-10 and better variety, jump back in with those choices.

This has worked well for me, and with a few things learned along the way:

1) Used receivers can be authorized without extra charge from anyone. You need to call SRL as many have said, and verify the unit or units can be "cleared" by Motorola. They'll verify they CAN be cleared while you're on the phone. I have (3) and all were cleared, I was notified by e-mail within 24 hours. I'm already in their database so the e-mail was easy for them. Otherwise, check back. (takes about a day or two to clear 'em from the Motorola database.)

2) If you have a 4D, and you're retiring it in favor of a 410, check your 4D's menu to see if your LNBF setting is standard, or "offset 90 degrees" . If it is "standard", you will need to re-align your LNBF 90 degrees off its current position. Then, go back in to your 4D menus, select the "offset 90 degrees" option in setup, tweak the signal, and all your current 4DTV programming should be fine. This makes your dish and system ready to change to a DSR 410.

3) Aimed properly at W-5, hook up the cabling, power to DSR 410. Check channel selection available. Mine could not reach the 200-number channel range, was stuck on the 500's and 600's from when it was used elsewhere. There may be an easier way to get the channels to show up, (I tried most everything, I thought ) but I did a master reset of the DSR 410, and got them to show. Same basic procedure as your 4DTV for master reset..

***CAUTION*** make sure your 4D is powered off completely (unplugged) if in the same vicinity, or you may accidentally do master reset on your 4D as well!!*****

Hook up your DSR 410. SRL will recommend channel 204 for the DSR 410 to take hits though data comes on all channels for this system, and if you have proper signal from your LNBF, selecting channel 204 should change the satellite icon to green. Call SRL, and be patient. They'll activate your cleared unit, and send a hit when you order programming. Do not worry if the receiver reads X4 satellite as you explore menus, it will be fine. You must have a green icon on the front panel left side when DSR 410 is turned on to get proper signal.

Currently only the packages that skyvision has are offered by SRL directly, but ask for "non automatic renewal" and a date for your packages to expire, then, in the new year, after the big changeover, select from the packages that they offer which, as you know, will resemble the ones they've offered for quite some time.

I did not have to pay any extra activation or "clearing fees" with SRL, there was no problem, and overall, an easy operation. But, if your polarity is "normal" on your 4D's install LNB menu and working properly before switching, you will need to make that physical polarity change for your DSR to operate properly.

I am quite happy with the DSR 10 simplicity, guide, and the installation. Got a good deal on a used receiver? Get it Cleared by SRL! Get it subbed! Our numbers will grow.

And, no, I'm not a traitor to the 4D. My interests however include FTA via a separate G-box and FTA receiver. By retiring the 4D, less space is taken up in my RV, and I still enjoy the best of both worlds...subs, and scanning the skies.

Hope this is of some help. I thought I was pretty "educated" on satellite procedures, but it took some help from this forum, and some experience with changing polarities on FTA vs. 4D to work the kinks out. All of this info, one form or another came from this forum. All I've done is put in one thread what others may need. Hope it helps a few!

(and, if the software experiments work for 4D, I'll have a spare unit to play-with or sell to another hobbyist.....good luck to our forum friends working so hard to preserve our mapping!!)

Now, go find those used 410 receivers, and enjoy! And, maybe find a few neighbors with dishes that want less contracts, rainfade, and problems, and tell 'em about 410's!

Cheers!
