I just mounted a new tv in my family room and I'm considering putting a Super Joey and bluray player in a basement closet directly below my family room.

A few questions:

1) Will heat be an issue in a closed closet? It is approximately 7ftx3ft and the basement as a whole stays pretty cool.

2) Would the remote signal work ok going through the floor to the basement below?

Having the Joey in an enclosed cabinet should not cause an issue especially if the basement is normally pretty cool. The remote signal should work fine going through the floor because it is a UHF signal but I can not say for sure that it would. Other signals in the home can cause UHF interference.

The Joey remote might work. I can turn on my Joey from several rooms in my house the furthest being about 35 'air' feet and through 3 walls. You could unplug everything from your Super Joey and power it up in that closet and see if you can get it to turn on from your family room. If you ever have to reset your Super Joey, and you do from time to time, it might be a bit of a hassle to need to go downstairs to get it done. The bluray player is a whole different deal. Its remote is infra-red and you need a direct look at the player to get it to operate (the Joey is radio frequency). Secondarily, do you really want to go to the basement to load a disc and then go upstairs to watch it?

I have an IR extender for my bluray player, so I can run that up from the basement and I shouldn't have any issues there. As for needing to go down to the basement to insert a disc, it is only a very minor inconvenience and we don't watch movies on disc all that often. Any inconvenience will be outweighed by the benefit of keeping all my components out of reach of my 1 year old.

Gotcha on all points... :)

Returning to answer my own question...

I got everything wired up in my basement closet and the Super Joey remote wouldn't work from the 1st floor. The only way I could get it to work was if I stood directly above where I knew the receiver to be and pointed the remote down at it.

Since that wasn't acceptable, I ended up switching the location of my Hopper and putting that in the basement closet. The Hopper remote has no problem getting a signal through from anywhere in my family room. It wasn't my ideal setup, but it will work.
